RAY TO CHAIR AG PANEL
State Rep. Robert Ray, D-Fort Valley, has been re-named chairman of the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee.
Ray was named to the post by House Speaker Terry Coleman, D-Eastman.
"I'm excited about being chairman of the Agriculture Committee and looking forward to the challenges ahead," said Rep. Ray.
"The House is reliant on the committee system and leadership provided by the committee chairs," Speaker Coleman said. "The volume and variety of legislation introduced during a session requires careful review by the committees empaneled to study and make recommendations concerning the bills and resolutions in the areas of their expertise."
Thirty-five separate standing committees consider by subject area the thousands of bills and resolutions which are introduced each year and range from topics including state budgeting, the courts, public health and taxation.
"Representative Ray's outstanding service to the House makes him an able and respected choice for chairman," Coleman said. "His demonstrated leadership and ability contribute greatly to the effectiveness of the Committee and the House generally."
The Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee oversees farm policy and proposed agriculture related legislation in addition to a wide range of issues affecting Georgia consumers.
In addition to serving as the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Chairman, Rep. Ray also serves on the Rules Committee and the budget writing House Appropriations Committee.
