ROYAL TAPPED TO HEAD WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE
Atlanta State Representative Richard Royal (D-Camilla) has been appointed as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee by House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman). He replaces representative Tom Buck.(D-Columbus) who will become the new chairman of Appropriations.
Rep. Royal will be responsible for chairing a powerful committee that examines legislation concerning taxation and revenue collection for the state of Georgia. Also, all fiscal related matters must originate in the House, making it the first stop for many high profile bills.
"I am humbled by my appointment to this important committee," said Rep. Royal. "This is an awesome responsibility especially in times of economic uncertainty and I will work to ensure that every Georgian is treated fairly."
"Representative Royal's outstanding service to the House makes him an able and respected choice for chairman," said House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman). "His demonstrated leadership and ability will contribute greatly to the effectiveness of the Ways and Means Committee and the House generally."
Rep. Royal, a lawmaker since 1983, is a former Chairman of the State Planning and Community Affairs Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Natural Resources and Environment and MARTOC committees.
