Rep. Smith Honored by Georgia Municipal Association
Atlanta Representative Tommy Smith, D-Nichols, was presented a 2002 "Champion of Georgia's Cities Award" from the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) at the City Council meeting in Alma on August 19. The award, given annually to state legislators who actively support major GMA initiatives and goals, was given to Rep. Smith for his tireless role in defending the rights of local governments.
During the 2002 session, Rep. Smith worked with GMA to appropriate funding for the Georgia Cities Foundation. The Foundation makes low interest loans to cities and downtown development authorities for revitalization projects in downtowns.
"Representative Smith has played an important role in many of GMA's major legislative successes in recent years," said GMA Executive Director Jim Higdon. "He is certainly a friend and a supporter of cities, but he is also a great ambassador for the South Georgia area. He understands the issues and represents the people of his district well. We appreciate his willingness to work on behalf of Georgia's cities for politive economic growth and good government. Representative Smith has always been available to provide expert advice and direction and GMA is grateful for his efforts."
"I was very grateful to receive this award," said Smith, "And I look forward to continuing to work with Mr. Higdon and the Georgia Municipal Association."
Rep. Smith serves as chairperson of the Economic Development Sub-Committee of the House Appropriations Committee. This sub-committee oversees the budget for the House on issues involving Community Affairs, Industry Trade and Tourism, and the Georgia Ports Authority. The sub-committee also has budget oversight for the Jekyl Island State Park Authority, and the State Soil and Water Conservation program.
