Mobley to Lead Study of Allowing Drivers' Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants

Aim is Reduction of Uninsured Motorists on Georgia's Highways

Atlanta State Representative Barbara Mobley (D-Decatur) will chair a House Study Committee formed from the passage of HR 975 which calls for an examination of HB 851. The House Bill would expand the definition of resident for the purpose of allowing undocumented immigrants with a valid drivers license from a state bordering Georgia or from Canada or Mexico, to drive legally in Georgia, thus giving the them access to auto insurance.

She was named to the post by House Speaker Thomas B. Murphy (D-Bremen). Representative Mobley sponsored HB 851.

According to the resolution creating the study committee, current standards for obtaining a Georgia driver's license prohibit numerous persons living within the State of Georgia from obtaining a driver license and consequently from obtaining automobile insurance.

The committee has met once and members in attendance included Reps. Ron Dodson (DLake City) and Ron Sailor (D-Decatur). Scheduled meetings include Oct. 1st at 10:00 am at the Dekalb County Library located at 215 Sycamore St., Decatur, Nov. 18th in Savannah at
10:00 am at the Savannah Electric and Power Auditorium at 600 E. Bay St. and Dec. 6 in
Gainesville at 10:00 am at the GA. Mountain Civic Center located at 301Main St. in
meeting room C.

"We have a problem in Georgia with too many people on our roads without auto insurance," said Rep. Mobley. "Granting a license to those undocumented immigrants who have valid documents (to be later specified) from another state or country, and are driving now without a Georgia license, is a sensible public safety issue. It would give more people on our roads access to auto insurance, which is in the best interest of the state. It would also help keep the cost for uninsured motorists down."

Rep. Mobley, a lawmaker since 1992, serves as Vice-Chair of the Special Judiciary Committee, Secretary of the Higher Education Committee and as a member of the Transportation Committee.
