Smith Named to State Archaeology Advisory Council
September 16, 2002
Atlanta Representative Lynn Smith, R-Newnan, has been selected to serve on the newly created state Underwater Archaeology Advisory Council.
Georgia is currently the only southeastern seaboard state which has no underwater archaeological program by which to administer law and encourage exploration and preservation of the state's underwater historic and pre-historic sites.
The council will be tasked with evaluating the underwater archaeology programs in other southeastern states and identifying the needs concerning proper state management of such resources in Georgia, including public participation in their exploration. The council's findings and recommendations will be reported to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in December.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity," said Rep. Smith. "Georgia is well known to have some of North America's most important archaeological sites. And with some of our most important sites so near our coastal waters, I find it amazing we don't have an underwater archaeology program. I have no doubt there are more sites on our coasts to teach us about Georgia's past, and I see this Advisory Council as a good first step toward ensuring those sites are preserved for future generations to learn from and enjoy."
