Powell, McCall Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project
Atlanta Representatives Alan Powell, D-Hartwell, and Tom McCall, D-Elberton, announced today that the city of Colbert has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $12,000, which will begin preservation efforts for the historic Colbert School.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
Colbert School was built in 1924 to serve the community as an elementary and high school. The original school remains intact and consists of six classrooms and a 300-seat auditorium. Although it was closed in 1976, portions of the school have continued to be used by the board of education. Grant funds will be used to produce a preservation plan to guide the restoration of the school.
"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. McCall. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great."
"The Colbert School is a part of our history and heritage; a physical link to our past," said Rep. Powell. "I look forward to this project's completion so that this historic facility may serve as a bridge between our past, and Georgia's collective future."
