Coleman, Moore Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project

Atlanta Representative Terry Coleman, D-Eastman, and Senator Michael Moore, D-Warner Robins, announced today that the city of Cochran has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $5,800, which will be used to aid restoration efforts for the Cochran City Auditorium.

The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.

The Cochran City Auditorium was constructed around 1928 for use by the students of Cochran High School and the citizens of Cochran. The grant money will be used to repair the structures historic wooden windows to prevent further water infiltration. Once restored, the city plans to use the facility for local events, as well as a meeting place for various community organizations and clubs.

"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Coleman. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Cochran City Auditorium is a part of our heritage; a physical link to our past. I whole heartedly support the efforts to preserve this historic structure for future generations of Georgians to learn from and to enjoy."
