Hanner, Hooks Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project

Atlanta Representative Bob Hanner, D-Parrott, and Senator George Hooks, D-Americus, announced today that Chattahoochee County has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $4,500, which will be used to prepare for a restoration of the Chattahoochee County Jail.

The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.

The two-story, brick Chattahoochee County Jail was constructed in 1902 and used until the 1970s. Having already completed an exterior renovation of the building, the new funds will be used to produce a rehabilitation plan for the interior of the jail. Once completed, the historic building will be used by the citizens of Chattahoochee County as an archive facility and museum. "I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Hanner. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Chattahoochee County Jail is a part of our heritage; a physical link to our past. I look forward to this project's completion so that this historic facility may serve as a bridge between our collective past, and Georgia's future."
