Parrish, Gillis Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project

Atlanta Representative Butch Parrish, D-Swainsboro, and Senator Hugh Gillis, D-Soperton, announced today that the city of Swainsboro has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $13,000, which will be used to restore the historic Swainsboro Steam Plant.

The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.

Constructed in 1921, the brick Swainsboro Steam Plant was the city's first public building to house the coal-fired generators that produced electricity. The city plans to rehabilitate the Steam Plant and adjacent water-related structures for use as the Swainsboro Water and Power Museum complex. Grant funds will be used to re-roof the structure and repair its windows and doors.

"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Parrish. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Swainsboro Steam Plant is a part of our heritage; a physical link to our past.
