Parrish, Gillis Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project
Atlanta Representative Butch Parrish, D-Swainsboro, and Senator Hugh Gillis, D-Soperton, announced today that Johnson County has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $24,000, which will be used for repairs to the historic Johnson County Courthouse.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
The Johnson County Courthouse was designed by noted courthouse architect J. W. Golucke, and was built in 1895. It continues to serve as the county's courthouse. Grant funds will be used to make the clock tower watertight.
"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Parrish. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Johnson County Courthouse is a functioning part of our heritage; a physical link to our past. I look forward to this projects completion so that this historic facility may continue to serve as a bridge between our collective past, and Georgia's future."
