Hudson, Bowen Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project
Atlanta Representative Newt Hudson, D-Rochelle, and Senator Rooney Bowen, D-Cordele, announced today that the city of Ocilla has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $10,000, which will be used for repairs to the historic Ocilla Public School.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
Completed in 1936, the Ocilla Public School housed both elementary and high school students. Later, the school was renamed the Ocilla Elementary School, but was closed in 1987. Grant funds will be used to produce a rehabilitation plan for the school along with construction documents. The city of Ocilla plans to utilize the building's classrooms for public meeting space and its 700-seat auditorium as a regional performance hall.
"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Hudson. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great.
