Local Lawmakers Announce Historic Preservation Grants for Local Projects
Atlanta Representative Sistie Hudson, D-Sparta, along with Senators Don Cheeks, D-Augusta, and Faye Smith, D-Milledgeville, announced today that two area projects have been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant funding totaling $7,900 which will be used in historic preservation efforts.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
First, $3,100 will be given to the Taliaferro County Board of Commissioners to commission a restoration feasibility study for the Taliaferro County Courthouse. Located in downtown Crawfordville, this High-Victorian style courthouse has been the center of county government since it opened its doors in 1902.
The state will also dedicate some $4,800 so that Warren County may hire an architect and devise a restoration plan for the historic Knox Theater in downtown Warrenton. Built in 1936 by Margaret Knox Store, the Art Deco theater located on the courthouse square was closed in 1997, and was later purchased by Warren County. Once restoration is complete the building will serve as a community theater for the showing of old movies.
"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Hudson. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so the fact that we got two of them is great. The Knox Theater, and Taliaferro Courthouse are a pieces of our heritage; physical links to our past. I look forward to their completion so that these historic facilities may serve as a bridge between our collective past, and the Georgia of tomorrow."
