Local Lawmakers Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project
AtlantaRepresentative Henry Howard, D-Augusta, along with Senators Charles Walker, DAugusta, and Don Cheeks, D-Augusta, announced today that a local project has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $5,700 to begin a preservation plan for the Confederate States Powderworks Chimney in the city of Evans.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
The 168 foot Confederate States Powderhouse Chimney was built between 1862 and 1865 by the Confederate States. The powderworks consisted of 26 buildings extending along two miles of the Augusta Canal and manufactured most of the Confederacy's gunpowder. Grant funds will be used to hire a structural engineer to perform an assessment of the structural integrity of the chimney and develop a preservation plan for the structure.
"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Howard. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Confederate States Powderworks Chimney is a part of our collective heritage; a physical reminder of our past. We have so much we can learn from our past.
