Black, Golden Announce Historic Preservation Grant for Local Project

Atlanta Representative Ellis Black, D-Valdosta, and Senator Tim Golden, D-Valdosta, announced today that Brooks County has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive a grant in the amount of $20,000, which will be used to upgrade the Brooks County Courthouse.

The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.

Completed in 1864, the Brooks County Courthouse was designed by architect John Wind of Thomasville. The brick structure still serves as the county's court facility and the grant money will be used to install an elevator which will bring the historic building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and make the second floor courtrooms more accessible to all members of the community.

"I was glad to see we were able to get this money," said Rep. Black. "Out of roughly 40 statewide requests, only around 20 were approved, so this is great. The Brooks County Courthouse is a part of our heritage; a physical link to our past. So I am glad we are able to implement these upgrades which will allow us to continue using this beautiful and historic structure for years to come."
