Local Lawmakers Announce Historic Preservation Grants for Local Projects
Atlanta Representatives Ann Purcell, D-Rincon, Tom Bordeaux, D-Savannah, Burke Day, RTybee Island, and Lester Jackson, D-Savannah, along with Senator Regina Thomas, DSavannah, announced today that the city of Savannah has been selected from a field of more than forty applicants to receive grants totaling $29,000, which will be used to help pay for various renovation projects on some of Savannah's historic buildings.
The money will come from the Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and seeks to encourage counties and cities to preserve Georgia's rich heritage.
Of the total, some $9,000 will be used to complete brick masonry repair to the walls of Fort Jackson, which was begun in 1808, and completed in 1812. It is Georgia's oldest standing brick fortification.
Savannah's City Hall, designed in 1903, and opened in 1906, will receive $10,000 to hire the services of an architect to produce a rehabilitation plan for the west side of the City Hall's first floor.
Finally, a grant in the amount of $10,000 will be used by the Ossabaw Foundation to repair the Ossabaw Island Boarding House roof so the structure can accommodate today's visitors that include researchers, students, teachers and artists.
