Jenkins Named to State Commission on Family Violence

Atlanta - State Representative Curtis Jenkins, D-Forsyth, has been appointed to the State Commission on Family Violence. The appointment was made by House Speaker Thomas B. Murphy, D-Bremen.

The Commission, created in 1992, is charged each year with studying and evaluating the needs, priorities, programs, policies and accessibility of services relating to family violence throughout the state.

After a thorough study, the commission reports to the Governor, General Assembly and community on its findings and is responsible for initiating and coordinating the development of family violence legislation that is deemed necessary.

"Violence in Georgia homes among family members accounts for deaths, serious injuries and trauma to children that can last a lifetime," said Jenkins. "It's a problem that plagues all communities."

"I've seen the damage that can be done to families and look forward to working with commission members to make recommendations to the General Assembly, courts, prosecutors, local law enforcement and others,"said Jenkins. "If we can stop just one act of family violence down the road, then we will be successful."

Three members of the House of Representatives are appointed to the commission by the Speaker and three members of the Senate are appointed by the President of the Senate. The remaining are appointed by the Governor.

Rep. Jenkins is Chairman of the Special Judiciary Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Public Safety Committee and serves on the Appropriations and Interstate Cooperation committees.
