The second day of the 2008 legislative session was called to order by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle.
Senator Don Balfour of the 9th stated that the journal had been read and was found to be correct.
Senate Bills 339-342 and Senate Resolutions 701 and 706 were then read for the first time and assigned to committees.
Following the morning roll call, President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson of the 1st led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then introduced the Chaplain of the Day, Pastor Steve Lane of New Beginnings Church in Richmond Hill, who led the Senate in the daily devotional.
Lt. Gov. Cagle introduced Nurse Elsie Redden to the Senate. Nurse Redden will man the Medical Aid Station at the Capitol this year.
Sen. Lee Hawkins of the 49th then introduced the Doctor of the Day, Dr. Jack Chapman of Gainesville.
SR 691-700, 702-705 and 707 were read and adopted.
The clerk of the Secretary read House Resolution 1019, calling a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives to hear Governor Sonny Perdue's State of the State address on Wednesday, January 16 at 2:00 p.m.
HR 1019 was adopted by a vote of 33 to 0.

Lt. Gov. Cagle then appointed a Committee of Escort, consisting of Senators Johnson, Jack Hill of the 4th, Tim Golden of the 8th, Robert Brown of the 26th, Mitch Seabaugh of the 28th, David Adelman of the 42nd and Dan Moody of the 56th.
The clerk read HR 1020, which calls a joint session of the Senate and House to hear Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears' State of the Judiciary address on Wednesday, February 13 at 11:00 a.m.
HR 1020 was adopted by a vote of 29 to 0. The clerk of the Secretary read HR 1021, which outlines the upcoming schedule of the General Assembly. Majority Leader Tommie Williams of the 19th took the well to discuss the schedule of the Senate. HR 1021 was adopted by a vote of 41 to 0. Sen. Valencia Seay of the 34th took the well to mention that today is the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She also encouraged the Senate to sign her resolution urging the state to contribute funds to the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. Sen. Johnson took the well to encourage Senators to sign his resolution that would create a Constitutional Amendment to freeze property tax increases in the state with a floating homestead exemption. Following further announcements, Majority Leader Williams moved that the Senate stand adjourned until 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 16.
