1,300 jobs in 2017. Retail Trade positions were down 200 in 2018 after growing by 4,100 in 2017. The Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities industry added 10,300 jobs in 2018 after adding 8,000 workers in 2017.
After displaying employment growth for six straight years, the Information sector shed 3,900 jobs in 2018. Payrolls were up 5,100 and 600 in 2017 and 2016, respectively. The Information sector includes telecommunications, data processing, as well as the motion picture, publishing, and sound recording industries.

2018 Nonfarm Payroll Employment by Insdustry Sector

Employment in the Financial Activities sector grew by 4,900 in 2018 after growing by 4,600 in 2017 and 4,200 in 2016. In 2017, the Finance and Insurance industry added 1,700 workers, while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry grew by 3,200.

Total employment in the Mining and Logging sector in Georgia was flat in 2018, holding steady at 9,500. There was no job change in 2017 and 400 positions were added in 2016. The sector has not shown negative job growth since 2012.
Construction jobs were up 9,500 in 2018 and employment has now grown for six straight years. There were 6,900, 10,000, 10,700, 12,000 and 4,600 jobs added from 2017 to 2013, respectively. Job losses from 2008 to 2012 were, respectively, -17,100, -38,300, -15,900, -3,500, and -4,000. Of the 9,500 Construction jobs added this year, 2,500 were in Construction of Buildings, Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction saw jobs grow by 1,100, and Specialty Trade Contractors payrolls were up 5,800.
Georgia's Manufacturing sector grew by 7,700 jobs in 2018. Payrolls were up 8,700 in 2017 and 10,200 in 2016. After being down for five straight years, Manufacturing payrolls in the state have grown for eight straight years. Durable Goods Manufacturing accounted for 6,300 of the new jobs in 2018 and has now grown for eight consecutive years while NonDurable Goods Manufacturing grew by 1,500 and has added workers over the year for only the sixth time since 1998.
All Employee Average Hourly Earnings in Manufacturing increased $0.02 over the year as earnings grew from $24.25 in 2017 to $24.27 in 2018. Average Weekly Hours grew as the workweek increased from 41.0 hours in 2017 to 42.1 hours in 2018. Average Weekly Earnings in Manufacturing grew from $994.25 in 2017 to $1,021.77 in 2018.
Production Worker Average Hourly Earnings increased $0.48 in the Manufacturing sector, from $18.42 in 2017 to $18.90 in 2018. Average Weekly Hours were up from 43.0 hours in 2017 to 43.2 hours in 2018 while Average Weekly Earnings moved up from $792.06 in 2017 to $816.48 in 2018.
Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 16,300 in 2018 after growing by 13,300, 19,000, and 27,200, in 2017, 2016, and 2015, respectively. The Wholesale Trade portion of the sector added 6,100 jobs in 2018 after adding

Professional and Business Services saw employment increase by 17,400 in 2018 after growing by 16,400 in 2017. The sector is broken into three industries: Professional and Technical Services where 7,500 jobs were added in 2018; Management of Companies and Enterprises which grew by 2,600 positions; and Administrative and Support Services where employment was up by 7,300 over the year.
After growing by 8,900 in 2017, the Education and Health Services sector added 15,000 jobs in 2018 as both the education segment and the health services portion of the sector experienced growth. The Educational Services industry grew by 3,900 while the Health Care and Social Assistance industry grew by 11,100 over the year. Over the last 10 years, Educational and Health Services has grown by an average of 12,600 jobs per year.
Payrolls in Georgia's Leisure and Hospitality sector were up 12,000 in 2018 after also growing by 12,000 in 2017 and 18,500 in 2016. Since growing for 16 consecutive years from 1992-2007, then contracting from 2008-2010, the Leisure and Hospitality sector has now added jobs for eight straight years (2011-2018). The Arts and Entertainment portion of the sector added 2,700 jobs in 2018 after growing by 1,900 in 2017 while the Accommodation and Food Services portion of the sector added 9,300 positions in 2018 and 10,100 in 2017.
Employment in Other Services increased by 1,000 in 2018 after being up 1,000 in 2017 and up 1,600 in 2016. The 1,000 new jobs in 2018 were a result of Repair and Maintenance growing by 400 workers; Personal and Laundry Services employment rising by 500; and Religious, Civic, and Similar Organizations holding flat.
After falling for six consecutive years (2009-2014) and cutting 32,800 jobs, the number of Government jobs in Georgia rose for the fourth year in a row with 6,300 workers added in 2018. Employment was up 4,600 in 2017. Federal Government payrolls grew by 300 in 2018 after growing by 600 in 2017. State Government jobs grew by 3,200 in 2018 and by 2,400 in 2017. Local Government payrolls were up 2,800 in 2018 and up 1,600 in 2017.

The Albany MSA lost 300 jobs in 2018 as average employment in the area declined to 62,600. Employment rose by 900 in both 2017 and 2016. The decline in jobs for 2018 is the lowest decline in seven years. Job growth increased for the fifth consecutive year in the Private Service-Providing sector, which added 300 workers in 2018. Retail Trade employment fell by 200 over the year, after three straight years of job gains. Government employment was down 300 in 2018, its sixth consecutive year of negative growth.

The Athens MSA added jobs for the eighth year in a row in 2018, with a gain of 1,900 jobs over the year. The average employment in the MSA was 98,700 in 2018. The biggest job growth this year was the Private Service-Providing industries, which has grown for seven straight years. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added 300 jobs in 2018. Leisure and Hospitality, now with eight consecutive years of job growth, gained 400 jobs in 2018. State Government employment rose by 300, while Federal Government and Local Government positions held flat over the year.

The Atlanta MSA saw employment grow by 58,400 in 2018 after adding 62,700 jobs in 2017. With total average employment at 2,785,900 in 2018, this is now the eighth consecutive year of job growth in the area. Education and Health Services; Trade, Transportation and Utilities; Professional and Business Services; Leisure and Hospitality; Construction; and Government saw the most job growth over the year. Education and Health Services employment increased by 12,400 in 2018, which was the most out of all major sectors.

There were 4,100 jobs gained in the Augusta MSA in 2018. Average employment in the area increased to 240,900 in 2018 and has now expanded for a ninth consecutive year. Leisure and Hospitality employment rose the most in 2018, gaining 1,300 jobs. The sector has added workers for an eighth consecutive year. Federal Government and State Government employment were both flat, while Local Government jobs fell by 200. Financial Activities employment grew by 100 after declining for three consecutive years.

Employment in the Brunswick MSA was up by 900 in 2018 after 400 jobs were added in 2017. Employment in the Private Service-Providing sector increased by 800 jobs over the year, a seventh consecutive year of job growth. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment rose by 300 in 2018 after adding 200 jobs in 2017. Government employment was flat in 2018.

The Columbus MSA gained 1,800 jobs in 2018. This is now the second consecutive year of job growth in the MSA. Professional and Business Services employment was up 800 in 2018, which is the fourth consecutive year of job growth, while Leisure and Hospitality employment was up by 300, its second consecutive year of growth. Manufacturing jobs increased by 500 over the year, making it two consecutive years of growth. Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment decreased by 100 in 2018, its second straight year of job cuts. Government employment was flat in 2018 after being down in 2017.

The Dalton MSA saw employment grow by 1,100 in 2018, after 100 jobs were lost in 2017. The Private Service-Providing sector gained 800 jobs in 2018 and employment has increased for five consecutive years. Professional and Business Services gained 400 jobs in 2018, which is the fifth consecutive year of job growth in the sector. Manufacturing employment was up 300 in 2018 after being down 300 in 2017. Government jobs were up 100 in 2018 after the sector lost 100 jobs in 2017.

Employment in the Gainesville MSA increased by 2,700 in 2018, its eighth consecutive year of growth. Total employment in 2018 was 92,600 and breaks the all-time high set last year for the MSA. Private Service-Providing sector employment gained 1,900 jobs in 2018, which is the same gain it had in 2017. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment was up for the eighth straight year and rose by 500 in 2018. Government employment rose by 100 in 2018 which is the second consecutive year of growth.

In the Hinesville MSA, employment grew by 300 in 2018. The growth is the fourth consecutive year of gains in the area. Private Service-Providing sector employment rose by 100 in 2018, which marks the fifth consecutive year of employment gains. The Goods Producing sector, which includes Manufacturing and Construction, gained 300 jobs in 2018, which is the second consecutive year of employment growth in the sector. Government employment was flat in 2018 after losing 100 jobs in 2017.

Employment in the Savannah MSA was up for the eighth consecutive year, adding 4,600 jobs in 2018. The Savannah MSA's average total employment in 2018 of 183,700 breaks the all-time high set last year for the MSA. Leisure and Hospitality gained 500 jobs, which is the ninth straight year of growth. Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment expanded by 1,700 over the year. Education and Health Services employment lost 300 jobs in 2018 after three straight years of growth. Federal Government and State Government employment were flat in 2018 while Local Government added 400 jobs.

The Valdosta MSA saw an increase of 400 jobs in 2018 after losing 200 jobs in 2017. Private Service-Providing sector employment grew by 200 in 2018 after falling by 500 in 2017. Retail Trade employment declined by 200 in 2018 marking the second straight year of job cuts. Federal and State Government employment both were flat in 2018, while Local Government grew by 200 employment.

In 2018, employment in the Warner Robins MSA rose by 2,100. This is the fourth consecutive year of job growth for the MSA. The Private Service-Providing sector saw employment grow by 1,600 in 2018 and 1,000 in 2017. Retail Trade employment grew by 200 this year and has grown in four consecutive years. Government employment was up in 2018 with Federal Government and State Government employment growing by 400 and 100, respectively. Local Government was flat in 2018.
