Georgia's Mining and Logging sector added 500 jobs in 2016, bringing total employment to 9,500, after holding flat in 2015 and adding 100 positions in 2014. The sector has not shown negative job growth since 2012.
After being down for five years in a row, Construction employment has increased for four straight years. There were 9,600 jobs added in 2016 and 9,700, 10,900, and 4,400 added jobs in 2015, 2014, and 2013, respectively. Job losses from 2008-2012 were, respectively, -17,100, -38,300, -16,100, -3,800, and -4,400. Of the 9,600 Construction jobs added this year, 1,500 were in Construction of Buildings, Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction added 3,200 workers, and Specialty Trade Contractors grew by 4,900.

The Information sector lost 100 jobs in 2016 after payrolls were up 3,700 and 5,600 in 2015 and 2014, respectively. The sector cut workers in 2016 after four straight years of additions. The Information sector includes the motion picture, publishing, sound recording, telecommunications, and data processing industries.
The Financial Activities sector grew by 4,600 in 2016 after growing by 2,700 in 2015 and 2,300 in 2014. In 2016, the Finance and Insurance industry added 3,200 workers, while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry grew by 1,400.
Professional and Business Services saw employment increase by 20,300 in 2016 after growing by 21,700 in 2015. The sector is broken into three industries: Professional and Technical Services where 8,200 jobs were added in 2016; Management of Companies and Enterprises which gained 1,300 new positions in 2016; and Administrative and Support Services where employment was up by 10,800 over the year.
After growing by 16,800 in 2015, the Education and Health Services sector added 21,800 jobs in 2016 as both the education segment and the health services portion of the sector experienced growth. The Educational Services industry grew by 2,900 while the Health Care and Social Assistance industry grew by 19,000 over the year. Over the last 10 years, Educational and Health Services has grown by an average of 12,800 jobs per year.
Georgia's Manufacturing sector grew by 9,100 jobs in 2016. Payrolls were up 11,100 in 2015 and 10,200 in 2014. After being down for five straight years, Manufacturing payrolls in the state have grown for six straight years. Durable Goods Manufacturing accounted for 4,500 of the added jobs in 2016 and has now grown for six consecutive years while Non-Durable Goods Manufacturing grew by 4,600 and has added workers over the year for only the third time since 1998.
All Employee Average Hourly Earnings in the Manufacturing sector increased $1.10 over the year as earnings grew from $23.95 in 2015 to $25.05 in 2016. Average Weekly Hours were down as the workweek declined from 41.1 hours in 2015 to 40.6 hours in 2016. Average Weekly Earnings in Manufacturing increased from $984.35 in 2015 to $1,017.03 in 2016.
Production Worker Average Hourly Earnings decreased $0.12 in the Manufacturing sector; from $18.02 in 2015 to $18.14 in 2016. Average Weekly Hours were also up from 43.0 hours in 2015 to 43.1 hours in 2016 while Average Weekly Earnings moved up from $774.86 in 2015 to $779.06 in 2016.
Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 20,500 in 2016 after growing by 28,100, 27,000, and 12,300 in 2015, 2014, and 2013, respectively. The Wholesale Trade por-
Payrolls in Georgia's Leisure and Hospitality sector were up 21,300 in 2016 after growing by 20,000, in 2015 and 16,700 in 2014. Since growing for 16 consecutive years from 1992-2007, then contracting from 2008-2010, the Leisure and Hospitality sector has now added jobs for six straight years (2011-2016). The Arts and Entertainment portion of the sector added 2,800 jobs in 2016 after growing by 2,700 in 2015 while the Accommodation and Food Services portion of the sector added 18,500 payroll employees in 2016 and 17,300 in 2015.
Employment in Other Services increased by 2,100 in 2016 after being up 1,900 in 2015 and up 400 in 2014. The 2,100 new jobs in 2016 were a result of Repair and Maintenance growing by 1,100 workers; Personal and Laundry Services employment rising by 800; and Religious, Civic, and Similar Organizations adding 200 jobs.
After falling for six consecutive years (2009-2014) and shedding 32,800 jobs, the number of Government jobs in Georgia rose for the second year in a row. In 2016, employment was up 6,600 after being up 1,100 in 2015. Federal Government payrolls grew by 1,500 in 2016 after growing by 300 in 2015. After seven straight years of cuts, State Government jobs grew by 1,200 in 2016. Local Government payrolls were up 3,800 in 2016 after being up by 2,100 in 2015.

The Albany MSA added 700 jobs in 2016 as average employment in the area grew to 61,800. Prior to 2016, average employment hovered between 61,000 and 61,100 for the past five years. The MSA employment in 2016 is 400 below the average in 2009. Job growth was up for the third straight year in the Private Service-Providing sector, which added 700 jobs in 2016. Retail Trade added 300 jobs over the year. Federal and State Government employment were down 100 and 200, respectively, while Local Government added 100 positions in 2016.
The Athens MSA added jobs for the sixth year in a row in 2016, with a gain of 2,600 jobs over the year. The average employment in the MSA in 2016 was 93,900, as total employment has now surpassed the 2008 employment high of 91,400. The growth this year was driven by Private Service-Providing industries, including a fifth straight year of growth for Trade, Transportation, and Utilities where 700 jobs were added, as well as a sixth year of job gains for Leisure and Hospitality with an increase of 500 jobs in 2016. State and Local Government grew by 400 and 300 positions, respectively, with Federal Government positions holding flat over the year.

The Atlanta MSA added 85,700 jobs in 2016 after growing by 78,700 in 2015. This is now the sixth consecutive year of job growth in the MSA. Average employment in the area was at 2,667,800 in 2016. Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Education and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation and Utilities were the main drivers of job growth over the year. Professional and Business Services employment was up 15,200 in 2016, the most out of all industries.

There were 4,700 jobs gained in the Augusta MSA in 2016. Average employment in the area is up to 234,100 in 2016. The area has now displayed seven consecutive years of growth. With 2,600 new jobs, Professional and Business Services grew the most in 2016. Leisure and Hospitality has added workers for a sixth consecutive year. Federal Government and Local Government grew by 200 and 300, respectively, while State Government was unchanged. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment fell by 100 after three years of growth.

Employment in the Brunswick MSA was up by 1,600 in 2016 after 1,300 jobs were added in 2015. The Private ServiceProviding sector grew by 3,300 jobs over the year, a fifth consecutive year of job growth. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities grew by 400 in 2016 after adding 500 jobs in 2015. Local Government employment fell by over 1,000 in 2016 after holding steady for the past three years.
The Columbus MSA lost 300 jobs in 2016 after employment dropped by 800 in 2015. Manufacturing employment decreased by 400 jobs in 2016, making it the second consecutive year it has cut jobs. Leisure and Hospitality employment fell by 300 over the year, after five consecutive years of job growth. Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment increased by 400 in 2016. Government employment was flat in 2016 as Local Government added 100 jobs, State Government employment was down 100, and Federal Government employment had no change.

The Dalton MSA had an increase of 900 jobs in 2016. The area added 1,700 jobs in 2015 and 2,600 in 2014. The Private Service-Providing sector gained 800 payroll employees in 2016 and has grown for three consecutive years. Manufacturing positions were up 200 in 2016 after being up 900 in 2015. State Government and Local Government both lost 100 jobs, respectively, over the year while Federal Government positions held steady.

Employment in the Gainesville MSA grew by 2,700 in 2016, which is the sixth consecutive year of growth, after 4,200 jobs were added in 2015. Total employment reached 86,700 in 2016. This year's total number of jobs in the MSA tops the 84,000 jobs in 2015 which was the all-time high in the area. Total Private sector employment grew by 2,700 in 2016 while Government employment was flat. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment was up for the seventh straight year and grew by 400 in 2016.

The Hinesville MSA gained 200 jobs in 2016, this is the second consecutive year of growth. Private Service-Providing sector employment grew by 300 in 2016 and was up by 100 in 2015. Employment in the Macon MSA increased for the sixth consecutive year in 2016, up 1,400 over the year. The Macon MSA average employment in 2016 was 102,500, topping the previous average employment high of 101,900 set in 2008. The Private Service-Providing sector saw an increase of 1,000 jobs in 2016 after adding 700 jobs in 2015. Education and Health Services employment grew by 600, Leisure and Hospitality grew by 500, and Financial Activities added 200 jobs in 2016. Local Government lost 400 positions over the year.
