Annual 2015 Employment Situation
Payroll employment grew by 122,100 in Georgia in 2015, an over the year growth rate of 2.9 percent. With 4,267,300 nonfarm jobs in Georgia, the state has now shown both job growth and unemployment rate declines in each of the last five years. The annual average job gains in 2015 come after the state added 78,700 and 112,500 jobs in 2013 and 2014, respectively. All major job sectors added workers in 2015 with Trade, Transportation, and Utilities; Professional and Business Services; and Leisure and Hospitality growing the most over the year.
On an annual average basis, the unemployment rate in Georgia is down 1.2 percentage points over the year. The rate dropped to 5.9 percent in 2015 from 7.1 percent in 2014. In 2013 the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent and before that it was 9.2 percent in 2012. The all-time high annual average unemployment rate in the state was 10.5 percent in 2010.
Georgia has also experienced an increased in wages. Total Private Average Hourly Earnings in Georgia were up $0.50 over the year as hourly wages increased from $23.34 in 2014 to $23.84 in 2015. Total Private Average Weekly Hours declined from 2014 to 2015 with Georgians working 35.2 hours per week in 2014 and 35.1 hours per week in 2015. Total Private Average Weekly Earnings grew $15.21 in the state as wages were up from $821.57 per week in 2014 to $836.78 per week in 2015.
With 122,100 jobs added in 2015 and an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent, Georgia ranked 5th in most job growth and 38th in lowest unemployment rate when compared to all states.

The Wholesale Trade portion of this sector added 6,700 jobs in 2015 after adding 4,900 jobs in 2014. Retail Trade positions were up 12,500 in 2015 after growing by 13,200 in 2014. The Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities industry added 8,800 jobs in 2015 after adding 8,900 workers in 2014.
The Information sector added 2,000 jobs to Georgia payrolls in 2015 after growing by 5,400 in 2014. The sector has added workers for four straight years now after cutting jobs for 11 consecutive years. The Information sector includes the motion picture, publishing, sound recording, telecommunications, and data processing industries.
The Financial Activities sector grew by 4,000 in 2015 after growing by 2,300 in 2014 and 2,400 in 2013. In 2015, the Finance and Insurance industry added 1,000 workers, while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry was up by 3,000.

Georgia's Mining and Logging sector added 100 jobs in 2015, bringing total employment to 9,100, after growing by 100 and 300 in 2014 and 2013, respectively. Prior to these three years of growth, the sector lost workers for six straight years.
After being down for five years in a row, Construction employment has increased for three straight years with 9,700, 10,900, and 4,400 jobs being added in 2015, 2014, and 2013, respectively. Job losses from 2008-2012 were, respectively, -17,100, -38,300, -16,100, -3,800, and -4,400. Of the 9,700 Construction jobs added this year, 2,400 were in the Construction of Buildings industry, Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction added 1,300 workers, and Specialty Trade Contractors grew by 6,100.
Georgia's Manufacturing sector grew by 11,700 in 2015 after payrolls were up 10,300 in 2014 and 2,900 in 2013. Prior to 2015, the last time there were 11,700 or more manufacturing jobs added in a year was in 1995 when 13,500 were added. Manufacturing payrolls in the state have grown in only six of the last 18 years (2005 and 2011-2015). Durable Goods Manufacturing (+6,900 jobs) accounts for most of the job growth in 2015 and has now grown for five straight years while Non-Durable Goods Manufacturing (+4,800 jobs) also added workers and has done so for only the second time since 1998.
All Employee Average Hourly Earnings in the Manufacturing sector increased $0.64 over the year as earnings grew from $23.32 in 2014 to $23.96 in 2015. Average Weekly Hours were down as the workweek declined from 41.3 hours in 2014 to 41.1 hours in 2015. Average Weekly Earnings in Manufacturing increased from $963.12 in 2014 to $984.76 in 2015.
Production Worker Average Hourly Earnings decreased $0.07 in the Manufacturing sector; from $18.09 in 2014 to $18.02 in 2015. Average Weekly Hours were up from 41.9 hours in 2014 to 43.0 hours in 2015 while Average Weekly Earnings moved up from $757.97 in 2014 to $774.86 in 2015.
Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 28,000 in 2015 after growing by 27,000, 12,300, and 11,600 in 2014, 2013, and 2012, respectively. The sector endured job losses from 2008-2010 and has now added workers each year from 2011-2015.

Professional and Business Services saw employment increase by 25,300 in 2015 after growing by 29,800 in 2014. The sector is broken into three industries: Professional and Technical Services where 11,700 jobs were added in 2015; Management of Companies and Enterprises which gained 2,300 new positions in 2015; and Administrative and Support Services where employment was up by 11,300 over the year.
After growing by 13,100 in 2014, the Education and Health Services sector added 16,300 jobs in 2015 as both the education segment and the health services portion of the sector experienced growth. The Educational Services industry grew by 1,300 while the Health Care and Social Assistance industry grew by 15,000 over the year. In the 20 year span from 1996-2015, Educational and Health Services has grown by an average of 11,900 jobs per year.
Payrolls in Georgia's Leisure and Hospitality sector were up 21,300 in 2015 after growing by 16,700 in 2014 and 17,600 in 2013. Since growing for 16 consecutive years from 1992-2007, then contracting from 2008-2010, the Leisure and Hospitality sector has now added jobs for five straight years (2011-2015). The Arts and Entertainment portion of the sector added 3,100 jobs in 2015 after growing by 1,500 in 2014 while the Accommodation and Food Services portion of the sector added 18,100 payroll employees in 2015 and 15,200 in 2014.
Employment in Other Services increased by 2,700 in 2015 after being up 400 jobs in 2014 and up 100 in 2013. The 2,700 additional jobs in 2015 were a result of Repair and Maintenance growing by 1,400 workers; Personal and Laundry Services employment rising by 1,300; and Religious, Civic, and Similar Organizations showing no change.
After falling for six consecutive years and shedding 32,800 jobs, the number of Government jobs in Georgia rose by 1,000 in 2015. Government positions were down 3,400 in 2014 after being down 4,200 in 2013 and falling 1,600 in 2012. Federal Government payrolls grew by 300 in 2015 after being cut 1,500 in 2014. With seven straight years off cuts, State Government jobs were down 800 in 2015 and 900 in 2014. Local Government payrolls were up 1,600 in 2015 after being down 1,100 in 2014.

The Albany MSA added 100 jobs in 2015 after also adding 100 jobs in 2014. With total employment averaging 61,200 in 2015 and job additions for two consecutive years for the first time in nearly a decade, employment in the MSA remains 3,800 jobs short of its all-time employment high of 65,000 -- which occurred in 1996 and 2007. Job growth in 2015 occurred in the Private Service-Providing sector which increased by 600. In contrast, 600 Government jobs were cut in 2015 with 300 of them being in Local Government.

The Athens MSA added jobs for the fifth year in a row in 2015, with a gain of 2,100 positions over the year. With a total of 91,200 jobs in 2015, total employment in the MSA is close to its 2008 peak of 91,400. The growth this year was driven by Private Service-Providing industries, including four straight years of growth for Trade, Transportation, and Utilities which added 900 jobs, as well as a fifth consecutive year of job gains in Leisure and Hospitality. Government jobs were down 100 over the year.

The Atlanta MSA added 82,400 jobs in 2015, slightly fewer than the 89,000 jobs added in 2014. The MSA has added workers for five straight years and with total employment nearing 2.6 million in 2015, there are more jobs in the Atlanta MSA than ever before. Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Education and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation and Utilities continue to be the major industries pushing employment growth over the year. Of all sectors in the MSA, Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+19,900 jobs) and Professional and Business Services (+17,300 jobs) added the most workers in 2015.

There were 4,300 jobs added in the Augusta MSA in 2015 after the area grew by 3,900 in 2014. The MSA has now added positions for six consecutive years and total employment stands at 227,900 in 2015. Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+1,300 jobs) gained the most workers in 2015 followed by Education and Health Services (+1,100 jobs). After cutting jobs for three straight years, Government employment was up 200 in 2015 as federal and local government positions grew and state workers were cut.

Employment in the Brunswick MSA grew by 1,200 in 2015 after being flat in 2014. With total employment in the MSA is now at 42,000, Brunswick is 3,400 jobs shy of its 2007 total employment high. The Private Service-Providing sector added 1,100 jobs over the year and 400 of those positions were in Trade, Transportation and Utilities. Government employment was up 100 in 2015 with state positions being down 100 over the year after holding steady for the past four years.

After four consecutive years of job growth, the Columbus MSA lost 300 jobs in 2015. Manufacturing employment was down 500 in 2015 after being up 300 in 2014 while Educational and Health Services saw employment drop by 400 in 2015 after being up 200 in 2014. Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+400 jobs) and Leisure and Hospitality (+400 jobs) experienced the largest employment growth in 2015. Government employment declined by 100 in 2015 after being down 400 in 2014 with local government positions accounting for most of the loss in both years.

Employment in the Dalton MSA grew by 1,600 in 2015 after being up 2,500 in 2014. Manufacturing added 700 jobs in 2015 and is now on a three year streak of job growth. Trade, Transportation and Utilities gained 600 jobs in 2015 after adding 300 in 2014. Professional and Business Services employment is up 200 in 2015 after being up 400 in 2014. With 100 jobs cut in 2015, Government employment in the Dalton MSA declined for the first time since 2011 with all of the cuts in state government.

The Gainesville MSA added 4,000 jobs in 2015 as it grew for the fifth consecutive year and added the most jobs in a single year ever. The MSA grew by 2,500 jobs in 2014 and 2,300 jobs in 2013. Total employment is at 83,800 in 2015. Private sector jobs were up 3,900 this year while Government positions grew by 100. Retail Trade employment was up for the sixth straight year as it increased by 600 jobs in 2015 and Federal Government jobs were down 100 this year making it the third consecutive year it has decreased.

The Hinesville MSA gained 100 jobs in 2015 after being flat in 2014. The Goods-Producing sector added 100 jobs in 2015 after adding 100 jobs in 2014 while the Private Service-Providing sector held flat in 2015 after growing by 200 in 2014. The Federal Government lost 100 jobs in 2015 and has now endured job cuts in three consecutive year.

Employment in the Macon MSA increased for the fifth year in a row in 2015, up 1,400 over the year. Total employment in the Macon MSA is now 102,100 surpassing its previous high of 101,900 in 2008. Retail Trade jobs were up 200 in 2015 after being up 400 in 2014. Education and Health Services increased by 500 jobs in 2015 after no change in 2014. Government employment was down 100 in 2015 and was down 200 in 2014.

The Rome MSA saw a fourth year of employment growth in 2015, adding 400 jobs. In 2014, 2013, and 2012, respectively, the MSA grew by 900, 200, and 300. Manufacturing employment gained 300 jobs in 2015 after being up 100 in 2014. Retail Trade lost 100 jobs in 2015 after two years of growth. State Government employment was down 100 in 2015 and has not added jobs over the year since 2008.

Employment in the Savannah MSA increased for the fifth year in a row, adding 6,500 jobs in 2015. Over the last 25 years, the job growth in 2015 is second only to 2004 when 7,400 jobs were added. Leisure and Hospitality gained 1,400 jobs in 2015, the sixth consecutive year of job growth in the sector. Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 1,400 jobs over the year while Education and Health Services grew by 1,000 jobs in 2015 after holding flat in 2014.

The Valdosta MSA grew by 1,000 jobs in 2015 after adding 700 jobs in 2014. Private Service-Providing sector employment grew by 800 in 2015 and 600 in 2014. Retail Trade employment was down by 300 in 2015 making it two straight years of declines. State Government saw jobs drop by 100 in 2015 while Federal Government jobs were up 100.

The Warner Robins MSA gained 200 jobs in 2015 after losing 400 and 600, respectively, in 2014 and 2013. The Goods Producing sector added 500 jobs in 2015 and 500 jobs in 2014. Private Service-Providing jobs were up 100 this year. Trade, Transportation and Utilities lost 200 jobs in 2015 making it the second straight year of job cuts for the industry. Federal Government jobs were down 400 in 2015 and have now been down for four consecutive years.
