September 2014 Employment Situation
Payroll employment in Georgia was down 7,300 in September. The 0.2 percentage point fall in employment occurred as Leisure and Hospitality, Other Services, Manufacturing, Professional and Business Services, Construction, Information, and Financial Activities lost jobs. Meanwhile, Government, Education and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added workers.
Government employment grew by 8,200 over the month, as seasonal State Government Educational Services employees returned to work. Education and Health Services increased by 2,000 jobs in September, for a third straight month of growth. Employment in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities grew 700 over the month.
Leisure and Hospitality has not added jobs since May, and lost 9,200 jobs over the month in September. Other Services employment declined by 2,000 positions this month, led largely by job losses in Personal and Laundry Services (-1,000 jobs). Manufacturing lost 1,900 jobs in September, with losses occurring in both Durable Goods (-1,100 jobs) and NonDurable Goods (-800 jobs). Professional and Business Services employment shrunk by 1,900 positions over the month and has now declined for two months in a row. After seven months of growth, Construction employment was down 1,400 in September. Employment in Information declined by 1,000 jobs over the month. With losses in Real Estate and Rental and Leasing (-1,000 jobs), Financial Activities employment fell by 700 in September after being down 2,000 in August.
Over the year, employment has increased by 80,000 (+2.0 percent) in Georgia. While nearly all sectors added workers over the year, the majority of the growth came from Professional and Business Services (+24,100 jobs), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+18,800 jobs), and Leisure and Hospitality (+14,300 jobs). Manufacturing, Construction, Education and Health Services, Financial Activities, and Information also added workers. Government shed 1,500 positions over the year.
After increasing for four straight months, Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) fell to 7.9 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August. Over the year, the unemployment rate remains just below September 2013's 8.0 percent.

New Developments

Korean manufacturer Dasan Machineries will bring $30 million in investment over the next three years as it has announced it will open its first U.S. headquarters in Duluth, creating 150 jobs. The company will use high-precision machinery to manufacture components for the automotive and defense industries at this new location.
Tennis equipment and apparel company Prince Global Sports is relocating its global headquarters from New Jersey to Atlanta. Prince will have a team of 15 to 20 employees who will focus on marketing, operations and commerce activities at its new Buckhead office. Prince, which is owned by Waitt Co., will share Atlanta office space with another Waitt company: Jones Global Sports, which makes and sells golf sportswear, accessories and equipment under the Bobby Jones brand, the paper reported.
C hime Solutions, an outsourced human resources company and staffing firm that also operates call centers, is building a call center in Clayton County and is expected to employ more than 1,000 people. The new Chime Solutions facility will be located at the former JC Penney building at the Southlake Mall in Morrow about 15 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
India-based company Surya announced plans to open a state-of-the-art facility in Cartersville and create nearly 200 new jobs over the next few years. The company will invest $30 million in a million-square-foot corporate office and distribution center in Bartow County that will handle supply chain management, sales and web and creative development services for the company. Surya makes machine and hand-knotted rugs and sells other soft goods for the home furnishings market.
K umho Tire has started construction on a longawaited manufacturing plant in Macon that is expected to bring 450 jobs when production

starts in January 2016. The Macon facility is the Korean-based company's first U.S. plant.
P et treat processor Big Creek Foods is opening a new processing 20,000-square-foot facility in Gainesville that will manufacture and distribute pet treats that contain Georgia raised chicken. The company will add 25 jobs at the location and plans to double that job number within three years.
H anil E Hwa Interior Systems Georgia Inc. will expand its existing LaGrange facility, creating 80 jobs and investing $5.5 million over the next two years. The company will locate into an existing building in LaGrange Industrial Park. Hanil provides a variety of auto parts to Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, including interior systems, panels and bumpers.
S alude, a transitional rehabilitation facility in Suwanee, recently opened a 64-room, 46,610-square-foot facility on 14.5 acres on Northolt Parkway and bringing 70 new jobs to the area. The skilled nursing facility will focus on patients who have been discharged from the hospital, but are not well enough to go home many with post-acute, short-term rehab needs, such as those recovering from cardiac, orthopedic and respiratory procedures. It will have an estimated economic impact of more than $16 million in Gwinnett County.
C arpet and floor-covering giant Shaw Industries Group recently announced that it will expand its reclamation and recycling program to include investing more than $17 million into a new Evergreen facility in Ringgold, creating at least 70 new jobs. Complementing Shaw's comprehensive portfolio of recycling processes, Evergreen Ringgold will create a high-purity, post-consumer recycled material that can be used in a broad range of applications.
