New Developments
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced plans for a new product to be manufactured at a facility in Hazelhurst, a Jeff Davis County town about 100 miles west of Savannah. Walmart supplier Elan-Polo Inc. will start production of injection-molded footwear in Hazelhurst as part of a joint venture with McPherson Manufacturing. Hazlehurstbased McPherson is a major supplier of filters for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems throughout Wal-Mart stores and Elan-Polo's shoe brands include Crevo, Vogue and ExcerSteps. The companies will invest up to $30 million to get the facility up and running with 185 jobs initially being created. The joint venture between the companies is called EP American Footwear.
Mannington Mills Inc. is adding 45,000 square feet of space and 220 jobs to its floor tiling factory in Madison. The company expects to complete the new hiring by 2015. The Madison tiling factory primarily makes vinyl floor tiles, but it does produce some rubber tile. At its Madison and Conyers facilities in Georgia, Mannington manufactures LVT, for luxury vinyl tile, which is the flooring industry's fastest-growing product category. The expansion in Madison will make it the company's second-largest facility.
Wire and cable maker Southwire will expand its operations in Carroll County, creating 375 new jobs and a $95 million investment over the next four years. The expansion will include the addition of 300 jobs at the old Sony plant on Columbia Drive in Carrollton, another 60 at a substation cable plant in Villa Rica and 15 at the Carrollton corporate offices. Southwire bought a 144,000-square-foot-facility in Villa Rica and has a deal with Sony Music Holdings Inc. to buy Sony Music's 635,000-square-foot facility in Carrollton. One in three homes built in the United States contains wire made by the company and half of the utility cable used to distribute electricity throughout the country is made by the company.
Mobile device management company AirWatch, headquartered in Atlanta, will add up to 350 more jobs at its headquarters within the next two years in addition to the 800 new jobs it announced earlier in the year that it would create. AirWatch, launched in 2003, specializes in helping compa-
nies manage and secure mobile devices. It's a booming segment in digital security as more businesses adopt mobile products and as more companies allow their workers to use their personal smartphones, tablets and computers for work. AirWatch's continued expansion follows a $200 million investment in the company from a group led by Insight Venture Partners.
Southern Aviation Parts & Services LLC, which crafts high-end custom aircraft interiors, has announced that it will locate on Chatham County's westside with plans to have facilities in both Savannah and Pooler and invest between $15 million and $17 million while creating 200 jobs in the next five years. The Pooler location at 123 Westside Blvd. will have engineering, fabrication and finishing capabilities to serve general aviation customers. The Savannah location, at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, will focus on custom aviation interiors for larger privately owned aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and 757, as well as Airbus A319 and A320 models.
The Israeli company Caesarstone recently announced that it has selected Richmond Hill in Bryan County as the location for its new U.S. manufacturing plant. The new facility will create 180 jobs in Bryan County and represents a $70-100 million investment. The plant will be in Belfast Commerce Centre, a 904-acre area about 20 miles southwest of Savannah. Caesarstone makes engineered quartz surfaces that are used in residential and commercial buildings as countertops, vanities, wall cladding, floors and other interior surfaces.
Surya Rugs has announced a massive project on 75 acres at Cass White Road in Bartow County. The two phase project will first include 574,000 square feet with 50,000 square feet of that space for offices. An additional 711,000 square feet of space is planned to be added within three years of completing the first phase, bringing the facility to more than 1.28 million square feet under. The first phase of the project is nearly completed with the overall project scheduled to be completed by December 2017. Surya Rugs has more than 20,000 product lines from rugs to rug pads, pillows, throw and even wall art.
