Annual 2014 Employment Situation
Payroll employment in Georgia jumped by 120,200 in 2014, an over the year growth rate of 3.0 percent. With 4,155,600 nonfarm jobs in Georgia, the state has now shown both job growth and unemployment rate declines in each of the last four years. The annual average job gains in 2014 come after the state added 53,500 and 81,400 jobs in 2012 and 2013, respectively. All major job sectors added workers in 2014 with Professional and Business Services; Trade, Transportation, and Utilities; and Leisure and Hospitality growing the most over the year.
On an annual average basis, the unemployment rate in Georgia is down a full percentage point over the year. The rate dropped to 7.2 percent in 2014 from 8.2 percent in 2013. In 2012 the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent and before that it was 10.2 percent in 2011. The all-time high annual average unemployment rate in the state was 10.5 percent in 2010.
Georgia has also experienced an increase in wages. Total Private Average Hourly Earnings in Georgia were up $0.87 over the year as hourly wages increased from $22.47 in 2013 to $23.34 in 2014. Total Private Average Weekly Hours held steady from 2013 to 2014 with Georgians working 35.2 hours per week in 2013 and 35.2 hours per week in 2014. Total Private Average Weekly Earnings grew $30.63 in the state as wages were up from $790.94 per week in 2013 to $821.57 per week in 2014.
With 120,200 jobs added in 2014 and an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent, Georgia ranked 5th in most job growth and 45th in lowest unemployment rate when compared to all states.

Georgia's Mining and Logging sector added 100 jobs in 2014 after growing by 300 in 2013. Prior to these two years of growth, the sector lost workers for six consecutive years. Total employment in the sector was 8,900 in 2013 and inched up to 9,000 in 2014.
After being down for five years in a row, Construction employment has increased for two straight years with 10,200 jobs added in 2014 and 4,400 jobs created in 2015. Job losses from 20082012 were, respectively, -17,100, -38,300, -16,100, -3,800, and -4,400. Of the 10,200 Construction jobs added this year, 1,600 were in the Construction of Buildings industry, Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction added 1,200 workers, and Specialty Trade Contractors grew by 7,300.
Georgia's Manufacturing sector added 9,900 jobs in 2014 after payrolls were up by 2,900 in 2013 and 4,000 in 2012. Prior to 2014, the last time there were 9,900 or more manufacturing jobs added in a year was in 1995 when 13,500 were added. Manufacturing payrolls in the state have grown in only five of the last 17 years (2005, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014). Durable Goods Manufacturing (+6,100 jobs) accounts for most of the growth in 2014 and has now grown for four straight years while NonDurable Goods Manufacturing (+3,700 jobs) also added workers and has done so for the first time since 1998.
All Employee Average Hourly Earnings in the Manufacturing sector increased $1.11 over the year as earnings grew from $22.21 in 2013 to $23.32 in 2014. Average Weekly Hours were down as the workweek declined from 41.8 hours in 2013 to 41.3 hours in 2014. Average Weekly Earnings in Manufacturing increased from $928.38 in 2013 to $963.12 in 2014.
Production Worker Average Hourly Earnings increased $0.01 in the Manufacturing sector; from $18.08 in 2013 to $18.09 in 2014. Average Weekly Hours were also up; from 41.5 hours in 2013 to 41.9 hours in 2014 while Average Weekly Earnings moved up from $750.32 in 2013 to $757.97 in 2014.
Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 26,700 in 2014 after growing by 11,900, 11,400, and 11,700 in 2013, 2012, and 2011, respectively. The sector endured job losses in the previous three years with employment down 8,800 in 2010 after

dropping by 54,900 in 2009 and 13,000 in 2008. The Wholesale Trade portion of this sector added 5,300 jobs in 2014 after adding 2,800 jobs in 2013. Retail Trade positions were up 13,700 in 2014 after growing by 8,400 in 2013. The Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities industry added 7,700 jobs in 2014 after adding 600 workers in 2013.
The Information sector added 4,300 jobs to Georgia payrolls in 2014; the last time it grew by this much or more was in 2000 when 9,100 jobs were added. The Information sector, which includes the publishing, motion picture, sound recording, telecommunications, and data processing industries, has added workers in only four (2007, 2012, 2013, and 2014) of the last 13 years.
The Financial Activities sector grew by 3,800 in 2014 after growing by 2,400 in 2013 and 3,400 in 2012. In 2014, the Finance and Insurance industry added 2,400 workers, while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry was up by 1,400.
Professional and Business Services saw employment increase by 31,200 in 2014 after growing by 26,000 in 2013. The sector is broken into three industries: Professional and Technical Services where 12,500 jobs were added in 2014; Management of Companies and Enterprises which gained 3,000 new positions in 2014; and Administrative and Support Services where employment was up by 15,700 over the year.
After growing by 14,700 in 2013, the Education and Health Services sector added 13,700 jobs in 2014 as both the education segment and the health services portion of the sector experienced growth. The Educational Services industry grew by 1,600 while the Health Care and Social Assistance industry grew by 12,100 over the year. In the twenty-year span from 1995-2014, Educational and Health Services has grown by an average of 11,700 jobs per year.
Payrolls in Georgia's Leisure and Hospitality sector were up 18,700 in 2014 after growing by 17,600 in 2013 and 12,100 in 2012. The sector lost jobs in 2010, 2009, and 2008. Prior to 2008, Leisure and Hospitality had grown for 16 consecutive years without contraction. The Arts and Entertainment portion of the sector added 2,000 jobs in 2014 after growing by 1,500 in 2013 while the Accommodation and Food Services portion of the sector added 16,700 payroll employees in 2014 and 16,200 in 2013.
Employment in Other Services is up 1,100 in 2014 after adding 100 jobs in 2013 and losing 500 in 2012. The 1,100 jobs added in 2013 were a result of Repair and Maintenance growing by 900 workers; Personal and Laundry Services employment rising by 1,200; and Religious, Civic, and Similar Organizations cutting 1,000 jobs.
After falling for five consecutive years and shedding 26,700 jobs, the number of Government jobs in Georgia rose by 400 in 2014. Government positions were down 1,500 in 2013 after being down 1,600 in 2012 and falling 11,900 in 2011. Federal Government payrolls were down 1,500 in 2014 after being cut 2,400 in 2013. State Government jobs were up 3,100 in 2014 and 600 in 2013. Local Government payrolls were cut 1,200 in 2014 after being up 400 in 2013.

The Albany MSA had no change in total employment in 2014 after seeing employment remain flat in 2013 as well. The MSA lost jobs each year from 2008-2012 before holding steady the last two years. With 61,000 average jobs in 2014, employment in the MSA remains 4,000 jobs short of its all-time high of 65,000 jobs -- which occurred in 1996 and 2007. Though overall employment remained the same from 2013 to 2014, Private ServiceProviding employment was up, including Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+100 jobs) while Government employment was down (-300 jobs).

The Athens MSA added jobs for the fourth year in a row in 2014, with an increase of 2,000 positions over the year. With 90,800 jobs in the MSA in 2014, employment remains just shy of its 2008 peak of 91,400. The growth this year was driven by Private Service-Providing industries, including a third year of growth for Trade, Transportation, and Utilities as well as a fourth year of job gains for Leisure and Hospitality. Government jobs were down 100 over the year.

The Atlanta MSA added 88,200 jobs in 2014. With its fourth consecutive year of job growth, the area is still 41,700 positions short of its 2007 employment peak. Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Education and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation and Utilities are the major industries pushing employment growth over the year. Of all sectors in the MSA, Professional and Business Services added the most workers (+25,000 jobs) this year, Leisure and Hospitality employment was up the most (+12,600 jobs) in a single year it has ever seen, and Government employment was up for the first time since 2008.

There were 4,600 jobs gained in the Augusta MSA in 2014. The MSA has now added positions for five consecutive years and with jobs totaling 224,600 in 2014, employment is at an all-time high. Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+1,800 jobs) accounts for most of the job growth followed by Professional and Business Services (+1,700 jobs). With state and local positions being cut and federal positions unchanged, the Government sector lost jobs in 2014 and has now endured job cuts for a third straight year.

Employment in the Brunswick MSA grew by 300 jobs in 2014 after being up 200 in 2013. Brunswick employment is still 4,300 positions short of its 2007 high. The Private ServiceProviding sector added 800 jobs over the year and 300 of those positions were in Trade, Transportation and Utilities. Up 300 over the year, Retail Trade last experienced this much job growth in 1996 when 300 positions were also added. Government jobs were down 100 in 2014 after holding steady in 2013.

The Columbus MSA added jobs for the fourth year in a row in 2014, with employment growing by 800. The metro area added 1,200 jobs in 2013 and 1,000 jobs in 2012. Financial Activities grew by 500 positions in 2014 and has not seen job declines since 2009 while Manufacturing employment went up 400 in 2014 after being down 100 in 2013. Leisure and Hospitality along with Educational and Health Services each grew by 400 this year. Government employment declined by 400 jobs in 2014 due to Federal Government and Local Government job cuts.

Employment in the Dalton MSA was up 2,800 in 2014 after holding flat in 2013. The last time the MSA created this many jobs or more was in 1999 when 3,100 jobs were added in the area. The Private sector created 2,700 of the jobs in 2014 with Manufacturing experiencing the biggest gain (+1,300 jobs). Professional and Business Services added 500 jobs this year after losing workers for 3 straight years. Meanwhile, Government employment was up 100 in 2014 after no change in 2013.

With 2,600 jobs added in 2014, Gainesville MSA employment grew for the fourth year in a row. Total employment is now 79,900 in the MSA, eclipsing the previous high of 77,800 in 2008. Private sector jobs were up 2,400 this year while Government positions grew by 200. Retail Trade employment was up for the fifth straight year as it grew by 400 in 2014 and Local Government jobs were up 200 this year after being flat the prior two years.

After two years of employment losses, the Hinesville MSA saw no change in total employment in 2014. The Goods-Producing sector added 200 jobs in 2014 after adding 100 in 2013 while the Service-Providing sector saw jobs cut for a third straight year. Hinesville MSA is one of three MSAs (out of 14) in the state that did not experience job growth in 2014.

Employment in the Macon MSA increased for the fourth year in a row in 2014, up 2,600 over the year. The last time the MSA added as many jobs or more in a year was in 1996 when 2,900 jobs were added. Most industries had positive job growth in 2014; the lone sector with declines was Federal Government where 100 jobs were cut. The 1,200 jobs added in the Professional and Business Services sector is the most ever recorded in a one-year period in the MSA. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities grew by 300 jobs as did Financial Activities in 2014.

The Rome MSA saw a third year of employment growth in 2014, adding 1,000 jobs. The area added 200 jobs in 2013 and 300 jobs in 2012. Manufacturing employment inched up 100 in 2014 after being flat in 2013. Driven by 500 new retail jobs, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added 700 positions in 2014 after adding the same amount in 2013. Educational and Health Services grew by 200 in 2014 after adding 100 jobs in 2013. State Government and Local Government each lost 100 jobs, pushing total Government losses to 200 in 2014 matching what was cut in 2013.

Employment in the Savannah MSA increased for the fourth year in a row, adding 5,300 jobs in 2014. Most of the job gains in 2014 came in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+1,800 jobs) where only two other years (2004 and 2005) have had better job growth and Leisure and Hospitality (+1,600 jobs) which saw its largest one-year job growth ever. Manufacturing employment in the metro area was also in record territory as it grew by 1,000 jobs in 2014, the best year ever for the industry. Government employment declined by 100 in 2014 after holding steady in 2013; the sector has now added workers in only one of the last five years.

The Valdosta MSA saw job growth of 1,100 in 2014, the third straight year of gains totaling 1,700 new jobs over the span. Private sector employment was up 1,200 over the year while Government employment was down 100 in 2014. The Goods Producing sector, which includes manufacturing and construction, grew by 400 and Service-Providing employment was up 700. Retail Trade employment was up 200 this year and grew by 100 in 2013.

In 2014, the Warner Robins MSA lost 200 jobs. The area lost 600 jobs in 2013 and experienced no change in jobs in 2012 when the metro area peaked with total employment of 71,200. Warner Robins MSA is the only MSA in the state to lose jobs in 2014. The Private sector added 300 workers over the year but Government positions were cut by 400. Though State Government jobs were up 100, Federal Government jobs went down by 500 in 2014 after being cut by 800 in 2013.
