Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 40, no. 1 (Jan. 2014)

January 2014 Data
January 2014 Employment Situation
In January, Georgia payroll employment was down 56,200 jobs over the month. The decrease in employment occurred with all major sectors losing jobs over the month, except mining and logging which held flat. Over the year, however, jobs are up 80,800 statewide.
After three months of seasonal job gains, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities lost 19,000 jobs in January, with minor gains of 600 in Wholesale Trade not offsetting the losses in Retail Trade and Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities. Professional and Business Services employment declined by 12,800 over the month, for only the third month of jobs losses out of the past twelve. Employment in Government decreased by 5,900 over the month, with Federal, State, and Local Governments cutting positions. Leisure and Hospitality employment declined for the third month in a row in January, losing 5,500 jobs. Construction saw losses of 4,100 jobs over the month, largely in Specialty Trade Contractors (-3,300 jobs). Led by losses in Health Care and Social Assistance (-2,600 jobs), employment in Education and Health Services declined by 3,500 in January. Following three months of job gains, and with ten out of the past twelve months showing job growth, Financial Activities employment declined by 2,600 over the month. Employment in Manufacturing shrank by 2,100 in January, driven by losses in NonDurable Goods (-2,000 jobs). After two months of job growth where 1,000 positions were created, the Information sector saw a decline of 500 jobs in January. Employment in Other Services decreased by 200 over the month and the sector now has not seen job gains since October.
Over the year, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Leisure and Hospitality, Professional and Business Services, and Education and Health Services combined added almost 72,000 jobs. Only employment in Government decreased from January 2013.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) fell for the seventh month in a row in January, from the revised rate of 7.4 percent in December to 7.3 percent in January. Over the year, the unemployment rate decreased from 8.6 percent in January 2013.
