October 2013 Employment Situation
Georgia payroll employment grew by 22,700 jobs in October. The over-the-month increase in employment was widespread as none of the major sectors saw negative job growth.
Following two months of job losses, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added jobs in October, with employment increasing by 6,800, led by Retail Trade's 4,400 new positions. Employment in Education and Health Services grew by 5,400 jobs in October after falling in September. Government employment increased for the third consecutive month with all Government sectors adding jobs. After three months of declines, Other Services added 1,400 jobs in October with Repair and Maintenance accounting for 900 of those positions. Construction employment was up in October, marking the second straight month of growth. With losses in NonDurable Goods tempering gains in Durable Goods, employment in the Manufacturing sector grew by 1,100 in October and has also grown for the second month a row. Leisure and Hospitality added 1,100 jobs over the month, with employment in Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation as well as Accommodation and Food Services growing in October. Eight of the past 12 months have shown employment growth in the Leisure and Hospitality sector. Employment in Professional and Business Services increased by 1,100 over the month, with gains in Administrative and Support and Waste Management Services outweighing losses in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services. Financial Activities employment is up for the seventh month in a row as it added 600 jobs in October. Following two months of job losses, the Information sector added 200 jobs over the month.
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Education and Health Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Construction combined added almost 92,000 jobs. Financial Activities also saw employment growth. Employment in Government, Manufacturing, Other Services, and Information decreased from October 2012.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) has fallen for three months in a row and dropped from a revised rate of 8.3 percent in September to 8.1 percent in October. Over the year, the unemployment rate decreased from 8.8 percent in October 2012.

New Developments
Whole Foods Market opened its first Savannah store in August 2013, the specialty foods retailer announced. The store is located on the former Backus automobile dealership on Victory Drive near Truman Parkway and employs 125 workers. Whole Foods' 35,000-square-foot store features an organic salad bar, in-store smoked barbecue, fresh-made gelato, natural body care products and nutritional supplements and a parlor with eight beers on tap. Whole Foods is the second national specialty supermarket to open a store in Savannah. Rival Fresh Market has a location on Abercorn Street.
Nebraska-based Cabela's Inc., a national leader in retail sales of outdoor gear, recently announced plans to open a Georgia location in Cherokee County. The new facility near Acworth is expected to create 200 new jobs. Construction will begin in late 2013 on Highway 92 at Interstate 75 in Acworth with plans to open in late 2014. The site is on the edge of one of the county's two opportunity zones allowing it to receive some state tax breaks. The 100,000-square-foot shop will be the first in the Cherokee Village commercial development being constructed by nationwide developer Majestic Realty.
Floyd County Productions has announced that it will lease a little more than 12,000 square feet in Building 17, part of Atlantic Station retail district in Atlanta. The production company behind the award-winning animated comedy Archer will occupy the first and second floors of the building. Floyd County Productions employs about 110 artists with a median age of 25. Earlier in 2013, FX renewed Archer for another season.
The Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority recently approved a plan to authorize up to $50 million in bonds to help Pactiv Corporations Advanced Packaging Solutions plant to rebuild. The 237,000-square-foot building on Airport Drive in Macon sustained severe fire damage in May 2013. The company, with 216 full-time
workers and over 40 part-time or temporary workers, expects to begin construction of the new facility in 2013 with hopes to be fully operational during the first quarter of 2014. Lake Forest, Ill.-based Pactiv Corp. is a large manufacturer and distributor of food packaging and food service products. Its product lines include custom and stock form, plastic, aluminum, pressed paperboard and moldedfiber packaging.
Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Defense recently reached an agreement that allows Lockheed Martin to build 71 jets. The Marietta plant builds the center wing assembly for the F-35 fighter jet, known as the world's most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft. The F-35's final production line is in Fort Worth, Texas, where the F-35's assembly is completed. The Marietta plant employs 330 people for the program; 230 are mechanics and the rest are engineers or managers. Expected to come off the line in 2015 and 2016, the jets will be used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines. Norway, Australia and Italy also are planning to buy some.
Toyo Tire's manufacturing plant in Bartow County will expand soon. The Japan-based corporation, announced another major expansion -- the third since the plant opened in 2005 on a 150-acre site in White, Georgia. Toyo Tire will make a $210 million investment on a 473,612-square-foot addition to the plant, which sits off U.S. 411 north of Cartersville. Construction is expected to begin in late 2013 with production projected to start in August 2015. It is anticipated that about 450 new jobs will be created under the expansion plan bringing the company to more than 1,100 employees when the additional workers are brought on line. The addition will add approximately 2.5 million tires to the production capacity, bringing the total to approximately 9 million tires per year. The Toyo plant makes passenger vehicle and light truck tires.
