Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 39, no. 1 (Jan. 2013)

January 2013 Data
January 2013 Employment Situation
In January, payroll employment in Georgia declined by 47,700 jobs over the month. Over the year, however, the state has added 79,600 jobs (+2.1 percent) to payrolls.
Over the month, employment in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities declined by 18,700 jobs, led by seasonal losses of 14,900 Retail Trade positions. Professional and Business Services lost 10,800 jobs over the month. January was one of four months in the past year that the sector has shown employment declines. Government employment was down 4,200, driven by 3,300 positions cut in State Government. With employment in Accommodation and Food Services declining by 2,900, Leisure and Hospitality lost 3,900 jobs in January. Employment in Education and Health Services continued its seasonal drop, shedding 2,800 positions over the month with Educational Services accounting for 2,300 of the lost jobs. Employment in the Information sector fell by 1,800 in January and has now dropped for two straight months. While gains in Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction offset job losses in Construction of Buildings, declines in Specialty Trade Contractors employment led the Construction sector to lose 1,800 jobs over the month. Other Services saw employment drop by 1,800 in January, its third consecutive month of losses. Following three months of growth, employment in Financial Activities fell by 1,100 over the month and the Manufacturing sector lost 900 jobs, with declines in both Durable Goods (-800 jobs) and NonDurable Goods (-100 jobs).
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Education and Health Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Manufacturing added almost 82,000 jobs. Information and Financial Activities also saw employment growth. Employment in Government, Other Services, Construction, and Natural Resources and Mining declined from January 2012.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) held steady at 8.7 percent from December to January. Over the year, the unemployment rate has dropped from 9.3 percent in January 2012.

New Developments

A Japanese manufacturer of beverages and animal feed additives has announced plans to locate a new facility in Fayette County. Calpis U.S.A. Inc. will construct a 36,370 square-foot plant and a 10,036 square-foot office building on 11.82 acres in Peachtree City. The company will produce animal feed additives utilizing a process of culturing, drying and grinding a soybean based product into a probiotic additive in powder form. The operation is expected to begin in April of 2014 and will employ 42 people.
Tractor Supply that had already announced plans to build a new distribution center in Bibb County made it known recently that they will need an additional 100 new employees for their new Macon facility. The $50 million, 700,000 square-foot building has been assigned 180 to 250 of the company's retail outlets to service. The company has decided that the volume of business that will run through the facility will require the additional workers.
There is more good economic news coming from an established Chatham County employer. Gulfstream Aerospace has leased a 70,000 square-foot building in Savannah that will house their new Information Technology Center of Excellence. The new facility will employ more than 400 professionals and 100 of them will be new hires.
A Fulton County mobile software firm is in the process of raising $150 million in an initial public offering during the first half of 2013. AirWatch LLC helps manage, monitor and secure employee cell phones, tablet computers and other mobile devices. With revenues growing at a rate of 40 percent quarter over quarter the Sandy Springs firm is the largest independent provider of mobile device management services. The growth is expected to produce about 700 new jobs this year.
There will be a $250 million investment in Fulton County to expand the advance manufacturing operation of an eye-care products company. Alcon is adding roughly 70,000 square feet to their campus in John's Creek. The project is scheduled to start in September of this year and will take three to five years to complete. The 300 new jobs created will be working to produce a new contact lens product and will include engineering and manufacturing positions.
The new job count will be 900 when the expansion of a Fulton County software company is complete. Cloud Sherpas helps large companies switch from software installed on employee computers and corporate servers to workforce applications such as Google Apps or Salesforce.com that are delivered and managed on the internet. The five-year old Atlanta company is expecting revenues to double this year and the additional employees will be

needed to handle the 18 percent growth the company expects through 2016.
A consolidation of a California-based computer company's Fulton County customer support facility with a call center will result in 200 new jobs. Hewlett-Packard has decided to bring the work from one of its New Mexico facilities to one of their existing locations in Alpharetta. These new positions should be in place by the end of October 2013.
In Fulton County a $9 million investment at a medical facility will result in 11,000 more square feet and 50 new employees. Piedmont Healthcare will renovate its intensive care unit and add to its ICU that will include 18 new rooms. The project at the company's Atlanta location should be complete by late spring or early summer this year.
A Gwinnett County communications company will build a new 60,000 square foot office building that will call for a $10 million investment. ViaSat Inc., which produces satellite and other digital communication products for government and commercial customers, will add 275 jobs as a result of this expansion. The new jobs at the Duluth facility will include software engineers, mechanical engineers, programmers and analysts with an average salary of about $90,000.
A global payments company will create a mobile technology think tank in the Atlanta Metro area. Elavon, a subsidiary of Minneapolis banking giant, U. S. Bank, will use this new facility to develop new electronic payment technologies and business intelligence services that allow merchants to better understand sales trends, manage inventories and tweak business operations.
The medical technology field is continuing to expand locally. EndoChoice, a company that sells endoscopy devices based in Alpharetta, has announced that the impending merger with an Israeli medical firm will bring 200 new jobs to the state with most of them being the Atlanta area. Once combined the company will retain its headquarter in Alpharetta, but will reach far beyond Georgia. A venture capital firm will aid the company in raising $43 million for the expansion.
The banking industry will add more jobs to Georgia over the next six months as Wells Fargo plans to add 200 new employees. The bulk of the new hires will be in the Atlanta metro area and will include mortgage bankers, small business lenders, loan underwriters and financial lending along with other services. This is an effort to better service the company's clients as the economy continues to improve.
