May 2012 Data
May 2012 Employment Situation
Georgia payroll employment increased in May, with 16,400 jobs added (+0.4 percent) over the month. The April to May growth in employment occurred as sectors including Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Leisure and Hospitality, Manufacturing, Educational and Health Services, Other Services, Construction, and Information added workers. The two sectors that lost jobs in May were Government and Professional and Business Services.
Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added 6,000 jobs over the month, for a third straight month of growth. Leisure and Hospitality saw its fourth consecutive month of job gains, growing by 5,000 jobs in May with Arts, Entertainment and Recreation accounted for 2,500 of the added positions; as did Accommodation and Food Services. Manufacturing employment increased by 3,000 jobs in May, with both Durable and NonDurable Goods adding workers. Educational and Health Services employment was up 2,200 over the month, with 2,000 of the positions in Health Care and Social Assistance. Employment in Other Services grew by 900 in May, as Personal and Laundry Services gained 600 jobs. The Specialty Trade Contractors industry drove the 800 additional workers in the Construction sector. Though it lost jobs nine out of the last twelve months, Information employment grew by 200 in May.
Government payrolls declined by 1,300 from April to May, with moderated gains in Local Government being overshadowed by losses in both State and Federal Government. Professional and Business Services also saw negative job growth in May (-600 jobs) after experiencing three straight months of growth.
Combined, Professional and Business Services, Educational and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities have added over 50,000 jobs over the year. Manufacturing employment is also up from May to May. All other sectors lost jobs, with Construction, Information, Leisure and Hospitality, Financial Activities, Other Services, and Government shedding nearly 20,000 jobs altogether.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was flat in May, holding at 8.9 percent. The unemployment rate dropped nearly a full percentage point from May 2011's rate of 9.8 percent.

New Developments

A recently vacated Carroll County grocery store will have a new tenant around the first of July this year. Food Depot plans to open its second Carrollton supermarket in the Maple Commons Shopping Center in the previous Food Lion location. The company has purchased other Food Lion locations in Douglas County and Paulding County. The Douglasville store has already opened and the Dallas store will open in June. Each of the three locations will hire approximately 80 new employees. Also, in the same center in Carrollton a new O'Reilly Auto Parts location will open in July that will employ 12 people.
An Italian packaging company is celebrating the opening of its North American headquarters in Gwinnett County this month. Cavanna Packaging USA, a subsidiary of Prato Sesia, owner of the Cavanna Packaging Group has occupied a 21,000 square foot space on Northmont Parkway in Duluth. The company has been in business for 52 years and manufactures automated packaging machines and turnkey systems for single and multi-pack wrapping of food, pharmaceutical and non-food products. Initially the location will create 12 new jobs.
A carpet manufacturer has announced a sizable expansion of one of their facilities in Chattooga County. Over a five year period Mohawk Industries expects to add approximately 500 new employees to their recycling plant in Summerville. This location recycles billions of reclaimed plastic bottles and containers into polyester fibers which are used in the production of carpet. The first phase of the expansion will strictly involve the acquisition and installation of new equipment to enhance the recycling and manufacturing process since the demand for polyester carpet continues to grow. The $180 million investment in the initial phase will create 100 jobs at first and is expected to be operational in 2013.
Jobs are becoming more readily available in the Technology Ridge area of Cherokee County since they have been designated an opportunity zone by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs last month. The opportunity zone designation that was created in 2004 allows local governments to provide tax incentives for economic

development and revitalization of pockets of poverty. Benefits include eligibility for a $3,500 tax credit for each new job created, the use of job tax credits against 100 percent of income tax liability and withholding taxes, and the expansion of the definition of business enterprise to include businesses of any kind. A number of businesses in Canton have recently added and or are planning to add jobs. PlayNation, a company that manufactures wooden outdoor play sets for children, has recently added ten new hires. There are 51 new employees in the process of being hired by FactoryMation, a concern the manufactures industrial electronic controls and equipment. A machine shop, BEMD Company, has just added ten new people. Chart Industries has just hired 51 new employees to help them manufacture medical and industrial gas equipment. Fast growing Bizchair.com, an online furniture marketer, will add 51 new people of its own by the end of the year. Lastly, Universal Alloy, manufacturer of extruded aluminum products, has completed taking on 60 new employees.
A Fulton County online financial services provider will invest $6 million in an expansion that will double its workforce and add up to 65 high paying jobs. Kabbage, which was launched in late October of 2010, serves the burgeoning market of online advance to online sellers. Their customers sell products on eBay, Amazon and Yahoo! and operate independent online stores. The company uses analytics and transaction data to measure risk and make cash advances to online sellers. Over the next two years they plan to hire 65 new employees that will include developers, UI designers, and product managers. To accommodate their growth they have added over 4,500 square feet to their offices in midtown Atlanta.
A company is seizing an opportunity to diversify into vertical markets in Gwinnett County. Encompass Supply Chain Solutions, a leader in forward and reverse supply chain management and high tech repair services, has relocated its service division to Lawrenceville and brought in 60 new jobs to their Tipton Industrial Drive location.
