Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 38, no. 4 (Apr. 2012)

April 2012 Data
April 2012 Employment Situation
Georgia gained 31,900 jobs in April, as employment grew by 0.8 percent over the month. The over-the-month employment gain occurred as sectors including Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Leisure and Hospitality, Professional and Business Services, Construction, Educational and Health Services, Financial Activities, and Other Services added workers. The three industries that lost jobs in April were Government, Manufacturing, and Information.
Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment grew by 9,200 in April, largely driven by increases in Retail Trade. Employment in Leisure and Hospitality increased for the third month in a row as 9,200 jobs were added this month. Professional and Business Services also saw its third month of job growth, adding 5,900 jobs over the month. After three months of losses, Construction employment increased in April, with 3,400 jobs added. Led by gains in Health Care and Social Assistance, employment in Educational and Health Services grew by 2,700 from March to April. With 2,600 jobs added in April, the Financial Activities sector added workers for the first time since November 2011. Over half of the 2,100 jobs gained in April in Other Services were from the Personal and Laundry Services sector.
Government employment decreased by 2,700 in April, with jobs added in Federal Government unable to offset the losses in both State and Local Government. The Manufacturing sector lost 300 jobs over the month, with negative growth in NonDurable Goods outweighing gains in Durable Goods. Information employment was down 200 in April after being down 1,400 in March.
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Educational and Health Services added nearly 40,000 jobs. Manufacturing also saw employment gains. However, Construction, Information, Leisure and Hospitality, Other Services, Financial Activities, and Government saw over-the-year job losses.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) decreased for the ninth month in a row, falling from 9.0 percent in March to 8.9 percent in April. The unemployment rate dropped 0.9 percentage points over the year, from 9.8 percent in April 2011.

New Developments

The developer of Leksell Gamma Knife, a popular brain cancer treatment device, will relocate its North American headquarters to a 50,000 square foot space at The Terraces office complex in Atlanta's Central Perimeter business district in DeKalb County. The Stockholm-based medical device company, Elekta, Inc., will bring about 250 jobs to the local area. The company's Leksell Gamma Knife is an advanced radio-surgery device designed to treat intracranial tumors, including metastatic cancer in the brain and other brain disorders without making an incision.
A children's clothing manufacturer will open a distribution center in Jackson County. Carter's Inc. will open their $50 million, 1 million square foot warehouse in June of this year in Braselton. Initially the facility will employ 250 people, but that will increase to 600 by the year 2015. The company which owns the Carter's and OshKosh B'gosh brands is headquartered in Atlanta and has been doing business in Georgia for 90 years.
A company that offers a no-credit-check plan for customers throughout the U. S. to purchase furniture is providing 20 new jobs in Mitchell County. Okinus Credit Solutions will fill positions including account representatives, data clerks and computer programmers at their new facility in Pelham.
A $1 billion plant will be built in Newton County to house a manufacturer of plasma-based treatments. The construction of the Baxter International facility near Covington is scheduled to begin this year with commercial production to start in 2018 and it will include operations supporting plasma fractionation, purification, fill-finish and a testing laboratory. When fully functional the plant will employ 1,500 people.
Tift County is getting a new business in the person of Empire Distributors, Inc. They are wholesale distributors of alcoholic beverages. The company was founded in Atlanta in 1940 and has expanded their customer base throughout Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. The project for the new distribution point in Tifton will call for the hiring of 18 new employees.
After reorganizing its business structure a local brewery in Clarke County is proceeding with an expansion to be able to readily access some as yet untapped markets. Terrapin Beer Company has had a production capacity of 18,000 barrels per year for a while, but the demand for the "craft beer" that they brew is on the upswing. So, plans are to double production at their Athens facility by next year which will result in 30 new jobs.

Oversight Systems, Inc. is expanding into new product markets and will add 100 new positions at their offices in Fulton County. The company is leveraging its software to help companies continuously analyze sales and business data to identify insights that could save money and boost client revenues. The Atlanta concern will target potential clients that are businesses with revenue of at least $1 billion in the manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, life sciences, energy and government agencies.
A large employer in the metro Atlanta area is expanding their call center in Gwinnett County. Assurant, Inc. is a dominant player in the specialty property insurance sector and has benefited from the economic downturn most specifically when mortgage lenders buy special property insurance when their borrowers drop their homeowners' coverage. Their special property unit is supported by their call center in Duluth and the company will add 100 new employees to help handle the increase in business.
Hart County will experience an increase in manufacturing employment over the next several years. German-based Ritz Instrument Transformers will invest $1 million to install a new medium-voltage transformer production line and an epoxy resin mixing plant. Some of the 50 new employees the company will require are being hired at this time, but the project will take several years to complete so the remaining hiring will come in waves.
Plans are in the works to increase production at an appliance manufacturer in Walker County. Roper Corporation's 39-year old, 1.2 million square foot cooking product plant has benefited from the company's effort to bring their manufacturing back to America where it is closer to the end user. The high cost of fuel has been a partial cause of this move so the Lafayette facility will add around 100 new employees by July of this year.
A company whose specialty is manufacturing fiberglass needle matt has announced it will expand its plant in Wilkes County. The AFG USA plant on Sharron Road just outside of Washington will begin production on a new type of fiberglass that has the ability to withstand extreme temperatures for long periods of time. The new product will have several uses including helping to protect our country's service men and women. The 23 or so new positions will be in advanced fields including
chemists and chemical engineers.
