March 2012 Employment Situation
Georgia added 13,900 jobs in March, with employment in the state growing by +0.4 percent from February . The over-the-month employment gain occurred as sectors including Leisure and Hospitality, Professional and Business Services, Manufacturing, and Government added workers. Industries that lost jobs in March include Construction, Information, Other Services, Educational and Health Services, and Financial Activities.
Leisure and Hospitality employment increased by 8,800 in March, led by Food Services and Drinking Places which had its largest over-the-month increase since April 2005. Employment in Professional and Business Services grew by 4,500 over the month and has now grown by 10,800 in the last two months. Durable Goods saw its largest overthe-month percentage gain in employment since February 2004, with Manufacturing as a whole adding 3,000 jobs over the month. Employment in the Government sector grew by 2,600 in March, driven by the additional 2,300 jobs in Local Government.
Construction saw its third consecutive month of job losses, with employment decreasing by 1,800 in March and by 7,700 in the last three months. Employment in Information fell by 1,500, its largest monthly job loss in a year and a half. Other Services employment decreased by 1,100 in March and has now been negative for eight of the last nine months. Educational and Health Services lost 700 jobs over the month, led by losses in Health Care and Social Assistance. Financial Activities employment fell for the fourth month in a row, decreasing by 400 jobs in March.
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Educational and Health Services added nearly 50,000 jobs. Manufacturing and Leisure and Hospitality also saw employment gains. Meanwhile, Construction, Information, Financial Activities, and Other Services saw over-the-year job losses. Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) has dropped for seven straight months and has reached its lowest level since February 2009 (8.9 percent), falling from 9.1 percent in February 2012 to 9.0 percent in March. The unemployment rate has dropped 0.8 percentage points over the year, from 9.8 percent in March 2011.

New Developments

Later this summer theTrinka Davis Veterans Village will open its new service facility inCarroll County. The U. S. Department ofVeterans Affairs Center in Carrollton is currently in the hiring process and is looking to hire physicians, physical and occupational therapists and nurses. The center's 130 new positions will also include medical technologists, clerical support staff, facilities management and VA police officers. The 73,884 square foot facility will include a medical office and a community living center. The current anticipation is for 3,000 veterans to use the new location's primary care services.
A company has opened a new recycling facility in Fulton County. The new $5 million plant inAlpharetta is owned by Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. and is on the cutting edge of efficiency. The single string facility will process between seven and twelve tons of material per hour. Their 44 new employees are currently recycling about 100 tons of material per day that is collected from their current contracts with local cities and counties along with subscription routes.
A company that provides healthcare programs and services to the uninsured and under-insured has opened an office in Fulton County. St. Louis based Centene Corporation now has a location inSandy Springs and is in the process of hiring 75 new employees. The company's Peach State Health Plan subsidiary in Georgia is a "care management organization." The new facility will serve the PeachCare for Kids program office, which provides health care to Georgia children of low income families through the age of 18.
A Denmark-based automotive supplier has announced plans to open a manufacturing plant in Laurens County. Dinex Group operates facilities in 14 countries and supplies exhaust systems for trucks, buses, vans and machines. The company's first operation in the U. S. is expected to employ 250 people. The 20,000 square foot plant inDublin is scheduled for completion in September and plans to double in the next five years. Their customers are Carrier, John Deer, Case New Holland,Volvo and Caterpillar.
The first tenant in Augusta Corporate Park in Richmond County has been signed and will invest $172 million in a plant that will employ 140 people. Starbucks Coffee Company will build a structure between 110,000 to 160,000 square feet with plans to begin operations in January of 2014.The Augusta location will be the company's fifth U. S. manufactur-

ing plant but this will be its first owned and operated facility to produce soluble products such as VIA Ready Brew, Frappuccino ingredients and many of Starbucks' ready-to-drink beverages.
The Atlanta metro area will get an opportunity to do business with a new group of dry cleaning outlets over the next two to three years.Tide Dry Cleaners plans to enter the market later this year and open five to ten locations. The parent company, Proctor & Gamble, launched the new cleaning stores in 2008, banking on the brand that has been found in laundry rooms for 65 years. The outlets will initially be opened in the suburbs and be about 3,500 square feet and employ 12 to 18 people. They will be open seven days a week and have dry-through service. In an industry that is not known for having any major players the company hopes to become the first by providing consistent, quality service.
A company is undergoing an expansion of one of its corporate divisions inFulton County. Coyote Logistics, a logistics and transportation services provider, will invest up to $11 million in upgrading their accounting and finance division in Alpharetta, as well as its driver service unit that tracks and manages shipments. The Chicago-based company is referred to as a "third party logistics provider" and chose the Atlanta metro area due to the favorable business climate, skilled workforce and available real estate. The completed expansion will result in 150 new jobs.
Bitzer in Hall County is beginning an expansion this month totaling 95,000 square feet. The company is among the leading manufacturers of compressors for refrigeration units and air conditioners. They operate plants all over the world and with their completed addition inOakwood 50 new employees will need to be hired.
The development of a new product has made it necessary for a Muscogee County battery manufacturer to expand their production.Exide Technologies, Inc. will have added about 100 new jobs by the end of 2013.The company's new Edge AGM battery is an Absorbed Glass Mat battery that provides high performance allowing vehicles to employ start-stop technology in which engines turn off at traffic stops, saving fuel. The new battery will cost about 60% more than a regular battery, but will last about twice as long and will be made in only two of the company's plants, one in Tennessee and the one in Columbus.
