New Developments
As early as March of this year Caterpillar will break ground on a one million square foot manufacturing facility that will be located on a 252 acre tract of land that is in both Clarke County and Oconee County. The proximity of this location to the Port in Savannah was a considerable factor in the company selecting the land between Athens and Bogart over several other cities in neighboring southern states. It is expected to take a full five years for the new plant to reach full production capability, but when it does the new job count should be around 1,400. The company decided to shift production of its smaller bulldozers, the D4 and D5, to the U. S. from Japan. The initial new construction equipment should roll off the assembly line late in 2013. A large number of additional jobs are also expected to be created by the company's suppliers who will locate in the vicinity to service their client.
A healthcare technology software firm will open a new location in Cobb County due to the area's extensive healthcare IT system, talent pool and prospective clients. PointClear Solutions, Inc. will hire 75 new employees over the next three years for their new facility at The Exchange on Windy Hill Road in Marietta. Some of the company's clients include the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, McKesson, Greenway Medical Technologies, ShareCare and SeeMyRadiology.
A $15 million attraction will open in Fulton County next month at Phipps Plaza. Legoland Discovery Center America will open in Atlanta and offer 35,000 square feet of entertainment featuring an exhibit of landmark buildings here in Atlanta that are made completely of Legos. This is only the third attraction of this nature that the company has opened. They plan to hire 100 people to operate the facility.
A business software developer is moving its office in North Carolina to Gwinnett County. Q-Matic Corporation has taken a 15,000 square foot office space on Commerce Avenue in Duluth and is relocating 20 jobs to Georgia. The company manufactures, installs and supports hardware and software products and applications to help companies, mostly in the public sector along with financial institutions, healthcare facilities, and retail environments.
A new facility is already under construction in Harris County in Northwest Business Park. Cable television and multimedia provider, Knology, is building a 6,000 square foot office and will hire 60 new employees. The West Point-based company which also serves the Columbus market will invest $5 million on the project.
Treutlen County will get a second chance at being a home to a company that produces bio-fuel. The Range Fuels' facility that was shuttered in early 2011 has a new owner. Lanza Tech Freedom Pines, LLC purchased the Soperton plant in January at an auction on the courthouse steps for $5.1 million. Lanza Tech plans to turn wood chips into gas just as Range Fuels did, but the new company will use a very different technology. The old process was based on catalytic conversion, but there will be a patented microbe used to convert carbon monoxide gas into fuel and chemicals this time. After the company reconstructs the plant they will need to hire some 60 new employees by 2015.
A company is undergoing a $4.7 million expansion at their facility in Baldwin County. Rath Refractories, which manufactures refractory bricks and mortar, will double their production capacity. The Milledgeville firm has already hired 18 new people to help with the production increase. The company is a subsidiary of Rath AG that is a fifth generation privately owned concern based in Vienna, Austria.
Tenneco in Hart County is expanding its production lines and will hire 350 new employees. The company manufactures automotive shock absorbers and struts in its Hartwell plant. Their headquarters are located in Lake Forest, IL.
An expansion in Whitfield County comes only one year after the company's doors were opened. The addition of a third shift at IVC US, Inc. will create 30 new jobs for the Dalton community. The vinyl flooring manufacturer has already surpassed the initial number of total employees it expected to hire for its 52,000 square foot plant off the South Bypass.
The entire state will benefit from a growth initiative and restructuring by the nation's largest property and casualty insurance company. State Farm Insurance Company will be hiring 150 new employees statewide. Having carefully monitored their employment levels during the recession the company must now react to the recent increase in business to maintain their level of customer service. The majority of these new hires will be in the company's John's Creek campus which is the headquarters of their southern region. They are also in the process of bringing in 400 additional existing employees into metro Atlanta in order to centralize their auto insurance and fire underwriting operations.
