October 2012 Data
October 2012 Employment Situation
Georgia's economy experienced one of its greatest Octobers ever in terms of job creation as statewide payrolls grew by 36,000 over the month. The September to October job growth occurred as all major employment sectors saw employment gains.
Education and Health services led the over-the-month growth, adding 7,000 jobs in October, driven by gains in Health Care and Social Assistance. Government employment increased by 6,800 over the month as Federal, State, and Local governments all added workers. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities employment in Georgia grew by 6,400 in October, with Retail Trade adding 8,000 jobs as businesses prepare for the holiday season. Adding 6,000 over the month, employment in Professional and Business Services has grown for the fifth straight month, led by Professional, Technical, and Scientific Services which added 3,200 jobs. The Leisure and Hospitality sector saw employment gains for the first time since June as payrolls grew by 3,000 in October. Information employment increased for the second month in a row, adding 2,400 jobs in October. The Construction sector added 1,700 workers in October with most of the increase being in the Specialty Trade Contractors industry. Other Services added 1,000 positions over the month, driven by Personal and Laundry Services. After losing 1,400 jobs over the previous two months, the Financial Activities sector added 900 jobs in October. The Manufacturing sector added 700 jobs over the month and has now added workers for a fourth consecutive month.
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Education and Health Services, Manufacturing, and Leisure and Hospitality added almost 72,000 jobs. Information and Other Services also saw employment growth. Employment in Government, Construction, and Financial Activities has declined since October 2011.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) declined to 8.7 percent in October from 9.0 percent in September. Over the year, the rate has dropped a full percentage point from 9.7 percent in October 2011.

New Developments

The construction of an $80 million project located in Cherokee County is moving along steadily and is expected to create 1,200 permanent and 1,600 seasonal jobs for the area along with giving the local economy a large boost. The first phase of the Outlet Shoppes of Atlanta is scheduled to open in Woodstock in August of next year on a 58.6 acre tract at the southwest quadrant of Interstate 575 and Woodstock Parkway. The developer, Michigan-based Horizon Group Properties, projects more than $130 million in annual sales. Some of the retailers slated for the center are Nike, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, Brooks Brothers, White House/Black Market, Guess, Michael Kors, Under Armour, Puma, Converse, Cole Haan, Vans, Le Creuset, Levi's, Naartjie Kids, Talbots and Carter's.
A Montgomery, Ala-based grocery retailer will open its first Georgia location in Dade County. Food Outlet will occupy the old Food Lion building on Highway 136 West and will offer its customers a cost-plus concept in pricing. The concept is that the merchandise is priced on the shelves at wholesale then the profit margin for the business will be added at the register. In the case of this retailer their markup is ten percent so the grocery purchases would be totaled at the register then ten percent would be added then the sales tax. The new Trenton store expects to hire about 45 full and part time employees.
A new type of business will provide a Fulton County city with some fun and about 100 new jobs when it opens soon. Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park will open a 43,000 square foot facility in Roswell in mid-November. This location is being called the largest indoor trampoline park in the country.
A digital entertainment company is moving its headquarters to Gwinnett County in a $5 million deal that will create 25 new jobs. Sports Challenge Network expects to double the size of their staff at the Dacula facility within the next three years. The company, based in California's Silicon Valley, creates social and mobile applications to help players connect and compete.

An economic impact of about $10 million will take place in a Carroll County community when a joint venture between a local company and Japanese concern takes place. Local Villa Rica employer, International Component Repair, a commercial airframe and engine component repair facility, will be joining forces with IHI Corporation of Japan to establish the first Japanese affiliated aerospace production facility in the United States. The new plant will need about 25 new employees to perform the work, which will be repairing a valve in jet engines which is used to divert cold aircraft fuel thought the oil compartment to maintain the oil at the correct operational temperatures.
There will be an upgrade of a warehouse in Chatham County to a refrigerated facility so that a company that specializes in frozen poultry can start using the location either late this year or the first of next year. Gulf States Cold Storage is in the process of creating a new refrigerated distribution center from a warehouse in Pooler. Once operational the facility will employ 50 to 60 people and be able to handle four million pounds of product a week.
Some 200 new professional jobs will be created when a children's clothing manufacturer moves one of their administrative offices from Connecticut to Fulton County. Carter's new Atlanta facility will provide the company mainly with store operations, finance, and information technology. It is not certain whether the many of the northern employees will transfer, but the overall move is expected to cost the company between $35 and $40 million. The current consolidation efforts should be completed by the end of next year.
A manufacturer of business jets will add about 35 new employees to its operations in Glynn County. Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation will fill the new positions sometime next year at their Brunswick plant which has 55,000 square feet of hangar space that is dedicated to cabin interior design and installation as well as servicing completed aircraft.
