March 2011 Employment Situation
In March, Georgia saw an over the month gain of 15,600 nonfarm jobs, an increase of 0.4 percent since February. This resulted from an additional 15,400 jobs in ServiceProviding Industries, combined with the gain of 200 jobs in Goods-Producing Industries. Since March 2010, total employment levels have increased by 11,500 nonfarm jobs, a change of 0.4 percent. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 10.0 percent in March, its lowest level since June 2010. This is 0.2 percent lower than the level during March 2010.
Leading the way in employment gains over the month was Leisure and Hospitality, posting a gain of 10,000 positions. Other positive growth in the private sector included Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+2,800 jobs), Manufacturing (+2,100 jobs), Professional and Business Services (+1,800 jobs), and Education and Health Services (+800 jobs). Payrolls displaying job losses were Construction (-1,800 jobs), Other Services (-1,600 jobs), and Financial Activities (-1,200 jobs). The public sector received a boost from Federal and Local Government as they added 1,400 and 1,600 jobs, respectively, while State Government payrolls were reduced by 300.
The Columbus MSA (-300 jobs) and the Macon MSA (-200 jobs) were the only two MSA's losing positions over the month. The Atlanta MSA (+8,600 jobs) had the largest net gain over the month but still remains below employment levels seen during March 2010, down 4,900 jobs since that time. The Brunswick MSA posted the largest percent increase over the month, posting an increase of 3.0 percent or 1,200 jobs.
Over the year, the major sectors gaining employment were Professional and Business Services (+19,700 jobs), Education and Health Services (+10,000 jobs), Manufacturing (+8,300 jobs), Leisure and Hospitality (+7,000 jobs), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+5,400 jobs), and Other Services (+2,300 jobs). The largest declines were seen in Government (-16,900 jobs), followed by Construction (-12,500 jobs), Financial Activities (-9,700 jobs), and Information (-1,900 jobs).

New Developments

Snell Enterprises, Inc. has moved its corporate office to Chatham County in the Savannah Economic Development Authority Building on Hutchinson Island. The company specializes in IT services for the Department of Defense and now has subsidiaries in analytics, communications and real estate development. They expect to add 15 to 20 new employees by the end of this year.
A former bank building in Clarke County has been selected to house a plasma collection center that will open this summer. The downtown Athens location will be the business address of Biotest Pharmaceuticals Corporation that is based in Boca Raton, FL. The company anticipates having about 50 professionals that will include medical staff, managerial staff, physicians, nurses, LPNs, medical receptionists, phlebotomists, training staff and others.
A new restaurant has announced that it will be opening in Hall County. Cheddar's Casual Caf will be located on Dawsonville Highway in the Beechwood Crossing Shopping Center and they plan to hire 150 people. This news is the continuation of a recent trend in the Gainesville area. There will be a grand opening of an Olive Garden this summer as well. Also, an Aldi grocery store has just recently opened.
A grand opening has been celebrated this month in Henry County. A Wal-Mart Supercenter store is now doing business in Locust Grove. The new store is expected to draw retail clientele from as far away as Butts County. The 155,000 square foot retailer is expected to create 240 jobs locally.
LogisLink, LLC plans to start operations this summer in Troup County. The former Palm Harbor Homes building In LaGrange will be home for the warehousing and logistics company that will service the Kia Motors plant. The company will spend $350,000 renovating their building and once up and running will operate 24 hours per day, seven days a week on two shifts. By the end of 2013 they expect to have 76 employees.
A Baldwin County concern plans to expand production and add up to 300 jobs. Triumph Aerostructures Vought Aircraft Division in Milledgeville has worked with the MilledgevilleBaldwin County Development Authority on the project. The company makes parts, including control systems and flight instruments, for commercial, military and business jet aircraft.

Chattahoochee Technical College and Georgia Quick Start have signed an agreement to help hire and train a portion of the new employees that a Bartow County company will need to complete their expansion. Applied Thermoplastic Resources located in Cartersville is planning to add 57 new employees and 27 of these will be prepped for their work by the two aforementioned organizations. The company is a post industrial nylon manufacturer, drawing from the waste supply of north Georgia's carpet manufacturing industry.
A new structure will soon be erected at the Cartersville-Bartow County Airport and it will be the largest building on that campus. This new facility will house a new operation for Phoenix Air in a 40,800 square foot space. The new hangar will enable the company to enter a new field of service expanding beyond air transportation into aircraft, maintenance and modification. When the project is completed late this year, the new jobs created should number between 30 and 40.
Geico's regional office, located in Bibb County, has announced plans to hire an additional 230 workers. The Maryland-based insurance company's Macon location is their largest regional office. It services the Southeast and Midwest regions, 15 states and 1.8 million policy holders.
The opening of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport's new international terminal next spring is creating jobs with the Transportation Security Authority. To man the new complex the agency will add 200 additional part-time security officers.
Dell SecureWorks plans to add about 200 jobs with the majority in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The company monitors corporate networks and helps protect against online attacks from crooks looking to steal financial and other information. They process 13 billion security events and see more than 30,000 malware specimens daily.
Aladdin Manufacturing in Whitfield County has been approved to receive some assistance from the Dalton-Whitfield Joint Development Authority in buying new equipment. The overall investment in this project is around $20 million and 30 new jobs are expected to be created at the Dalton facility.
