Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 37, no. 10 (Oct. 2011)

October 2011 Data
October 2011 Employment Situation
Georgia added 26,500 jobs in October, up 0.7 percent from September. The over-the-month gain in nonfarm employment occurred as sectors including Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Professional and Business Services, Education and Health Services, Leisure and Hospitality, and Government added workers. Sectors with negative job growth from September to October include Manufacturing, Construction, and Other Services.
After enduring job losses for three consecutive months, Trade, Transportation and Utilities led the October job growth with 12,200 jobs added. Professional and Business Services grew by 7,300 positions in October, led by growth in the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services industry. Following three months of job losses, Leisure and Hospitality employment increased by 3,400 in October with Food Services and Drinking Places accounting for most of the growth. Government employment continued to rise, gaining 2,800 jobs in October, after adding 11,500 and 5,600 jobs in August and September, respectively. Financial Activities gained 500 jobs in October, adding jobs for the first time since July.
Manufacturing employment fell by 2,300 in October, as Durable Goods manufacturing lost 2,400 jobs and Non-Durable Goods manufacturing rose by 100. Construction employment was down 2,000 in October and Specialty Trade Contractors have now lost 7,000 jobs since August. Employment in Other Services was down 1,100 jobs in October and has been on a continuous decline since July.
Over the year, Professional and Business Services, Educational and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities have added payroll employees. The Government, Financial Activities, and Construction sectors led the way in over the year job loss, with a combined 47,000 positions cut since last October. Information, Leisure and Hospitality, Other Services, and Manufacturing employment also declined over the year.
Georgia's unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) fell to 10.2 percent in October, from 10.3 percent in September. This also shows a decrease over the year, from a rate of 10.3 percent in October 2010.

New Developments

NW Technologies, a company based in Japan, will build a green energy manufacturing facility in Bibb County. The Macon site will produce solar and wind power generators and will be built in phases. The first phase would include a $5 million investment and create 25 jobs and be completed in 12 months. The second phase would take 18 months to complete and an investment of $10 million would create an energy farm and 50 new jobs. The third or "solutions" phase would build a research and development center that would employ mostly mechanics and engineers who ensure that the power generated goes to the power grid and work on nanotechnology, such as solarcharging technology for cell phones.
A Roswell company with an existing data center operation that provides financial risk management solutions has announced that they will open a risk management center in Crisp County. Chexar Networks, Inc. will invest $1.9 million in two 1,800 square foot facilities in Cordele. These two new locations will eventually employ a total of 500 people. The company provides technology and solutions to enable banks, prepaid providers and other clients to serve the nation's under-banked population now estimated to be more than 88 million people. Their clients need to change all types of checks into cash or "good funds" before they can acquire other services such as paying bills, sending money, topping off prepaid cell phones and loading prepaid debit cards. The first of the two facilities is expected to be operational in January.
The American division of a German manufacturing firm will relocate its headquarters and open a wind turbine component facility in Elbert County. Hailo USA will invest $10 million and create 200 new jobs over the next five years. The company produces climbing and service lift systems, platforms, railings, doors and other mechanical components for wind turbine towers. The company will be moving their division to Elberton from Holbrook, NY to expand and add production capacity to meet the needs of its customers.
One of Pratt & Whitney's service companies has opened a small facility in Muscogee County to be on hand to service one of its major clients. Turbine Support Services, Inc., based in Connecticut, has opened a 15,000 square foot facility in Columbus in Gateway Business Park that will eventually employ around 15 workers. The company's new "Georgia Operations Center" should help improve response time to Pratt & Whitney's large engine blade manufacturing plant and engine overall facility located nearby.

A relocation effort has resulted in a new business for Tift County. CooperCraft Communications, Inc., a leading provider of building technology solutions, will occupy a 25,000 square foot facility in Tifton. Choosing this particular community due to its strategic location the company will be better able to serve its diverse customer base that includes 19 hospitals, eight universities, 18 industrial facilities and more than 20 municipalities throughout the southeastern United States. The operations will begin in January of 2012 and will require 50 new employees.
Whitfield County has had some good economic news as it has been announced that an international horse food maker and distributor will purchase an existing facility to set up their new operation. Cavalor Inc. will occupy the old Pennant Foods building on Corporate Drive in Dalton. The plant is expected to employ 32 people when it is fully operational in two years.
A Fayette County employer will expand their current facility by adding a research and development center. Sany America will begin the process of adding 300 engineering jobs next year at their facility in Peachtree City with a $25 million expansion plan. The heavy construction equipment manufacturer's new R & D center will allow the new engineers to design and develop new products to enhance many of the company's product lines.
Mitsubishi Electric and Electronics USA plans to consolidate its Gwinnett County office and warehouse operations and add some 200 jobs over the next decade. The company will consolidate four facilities totaling 375,000 square feet into a single location with room to grow at their new Suwanee complex. The company has housed their heating and cooling division in Suwanee for 19 years.
A move to a larger office center will allow a Gwinnett County employer to expand and hire as many as 175 more employees in the next year. NanoLumens, a manufacturer of flexible and nonflexible digital displays located in Norcross, plans to consolidate their administrative, sales, operations, research, design and assembly divisions in a 32,000 square foot building in that same city which will more than double the size of their existing facility.
