March 2010 Data
March 2010 Employment Situation
Georgia nonfarm employment was up 10,500 (+0.3 percent) in March and the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate inched up from 10.5 percent in February to 10.6 percent in March. The number of nonfarm jobs in Georgia currently stands at 3,795,400. In February and March combined, the state has now added 17,800 new payroll jobs to its economy. The positive employment growth in the last two months marks only the second time since early 2008 that the state added workers in two successive months (the other two months were October and November 2009).
Over the month job gains were experienced in sectors including Leisure and Hospitality and Government. The Leisure and Hospitality sector, where 8,400 additional jobs were created, added the most. The 2,300 positions the Government sector gained arise from the Federal Government growing by 1,500 workers, State Government payrolls dropping by 200, and Local Governments in the state adding 1,000 jobs. The Financial Activities and Construction sectors endured the most severe over the month job losses. Financial Activities jobs were down 4,300 from February to March and the sector has now lost jobs in three consecutive months. Construction employment decreased by 2,000 over the month with Specialty Trade Contractor losses accounting for about three-fourths of the decline.
Over the year, the Educational and Health Services and Leisure and Hospitality sectors have added the largest number of workers while the Manufacturing and Construction sectors have lost the most positions. Educational and Health Services employment is up 6,100 over the year and Leisure and Hospitality has added 1,000 payroll positions. Manufacturing (-33,600 jobs) suffered the greatest loss of jobs over the year with Durable Goods manufacturing (-23,300 jobs) accumulating the majority of the decline. Construction positions have dropped by 27,400 over the year with only one month in the last year (October 2009) showing growth.
In March, metro areas displaying employment growth were Albany, Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Hinesville-Ft. Stewart, Macon, and Savannah. Payrolls in Dalton and Gainesville were unchanged while Rome, Valdosta, and Warner Robins experienced job losses.

New Developments
Safelite Group and Dayton Superior have announced their intentions to open new locations for their respective businesses in Barrow County. The new Braselton facilities will both be located in a building in the Park 85 at Braselton development. Dayton Superior manufactures specialty concrete products for non-residential construction and expects to employ about 100 people. Safelite Group will set up a distribution center for their vehicle glass repair and replacement operation and will have 92 new hires.
A new wood-based fuel and landscape material production plant is in the final stages of construction in Cherokee County. The Ball Ground Recycling operation is being built with assistance in the form of an industrial development tax-free bond issued by the Cherokee County Resource Recovery Development Authority. The company has consolidated a number of separate operations into this larger plant. With the bio-fuel production already up and running the investment of over $20 million has created 45 jobs, and with time that number is expected to rise to 100.
Monolith Hospitality, a company that furnishes and refurbishes hotels and motels throughout the U.S., has decided to locate their corporate offices in Dawson County. The complex in Dawsonville will also include the companys distribution center along with the general design and operations offices. The construction project will be completed in phases beginning in late 2010 and will produce 25 new jobs over the next two years.
In Forsyth County a new business is quickly moving into a 15,000 square foot facility in Cumming. Vossloh Kiepe, Inc. will be the countys 11th German based firm. They develop, manufacture and sell a variety of electro-technical products used on road and rail vehicles operating on urban and suburban public transportation services. The Dusseldorf based company is over 100 years old. By the end of the year the new jobs will number 10, but that is expected to double in another twelve months.
In Cobb County TASQ Technologies, a manufacturer of point of sale equipment, will hire about
350 local residents over the next 18 months as the company consolidates and moves to Marietta. The closing of the firms two California locations along with its Kennesaw location will put them in a new 266,000 square foot building on Canton Road. Aside from the 350 new hires the 145 existing employees will mostly relocate to Marietta.
In DeKalb County, Marten Transport Ltd. is relocating employees to a new Stone Mountain facility. The company is a truckload carrier that specializes in transporting and distributing food and consumer packaged goods that require a temperature controlled environment. Construction will begin in March of this year to house 150 employees transferred from their Forest Park location and a potential 400 new hires as expansion takes place.
Outcomes Health Information Solutions, LLC, a healthcare data auditing and analytics company, has moved into its new headquarters in Milton. The location on Morris Road in Fulton County currently has 200 employees with plans to accommodate another 100 over the next 12 months.
In Tift County two expansions are in the works. The Tift Regional Medical Center announced that the construction of a $9.3 million data center will begin this spring and will add 10 jobs to the staff that provides the hospital with information technical support. Also in Tifton the Georgia Department of Agriculture has begun a construction project to expand their laboratories. The newly improved facility will add another 25 jobs to the local economy.
Kia Motors Corporation is again making news in Troup County. A production shift is in the works that will increase employment levels at the automotive manufacturing plant by 600. The shift will bring the production of the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV to West Point from a plant in Alabama. This is due to the growth in U.S. car sales for both Kia and Hyundai. The transition is expected to be complete by the end of 2010.
