Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 36, no. 10 (Oct. 2010)

October 2010 Data
October 2010 Employment Situation
In October, Georgia added 22,300 nonfarm jobs, an over the month increase of 0.6 percent. The net gain resulted from 23,500 additional jobs in Service-Providing Industries, which offset the loss of 1,200 jobs in Goods-Producing Industries. Since October 2009, employment levels have decreased by 7,200 nonfarm jobs, an overall change of -0.2 percent. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 9.9 percent for the second straight month. This is an improvement over October 2009 when the rate was 10.2 percent; however, this marked the fortieth consecutive month that Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been greater than or equal to the national rate.
Each Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the state showed net job gains except for the Hinesville-Fort Stewart MSA and the Warner-Robins MSA, where employment levels were unchanged over the month. The Atlanta MSA led the way by adding 12,500 nonfarm jobs, an over the month increase of 0.6 percent.
Leisure and Hospitality (-600 jobs, -0.2 percent), Information (-700 jobs, -0.7 percent), and Construction (-1,500 jobs, -1.0 percent) were the only major sectors to see nonfarm employment decreases over the past month. The largest increases over the month were seen in Government (6,100 jobs, 0.9 percent), Professional and Business Services (5,900 jobs, 1.2 percent), Education and Health Services (4,700 jobs, 1.0 percent), and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (3,900 jobs, 0.5 percent).
Over the year, the major sectors gaining employment were Education and Health Services (+10,900 jobs), Professional and Business Services (+9,100 jobs), Leisure and Hospitality (+2,600 jobs), and Other Services (+2,200 jobs). The largest declines were seen in Government (-7,500 jobs), followed by Construction (-7,400 jobs), Manufacturing (-5,700 jobs), Information (-2,700 jobs), and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-1,200 jobs).

New Developments

Maxzone, a subsidiary of DEPO Auto Parts, has recently relocated its Southeastern Headquarters to Gwinnett County. The international company purchased more than 200,000 square feet of warehouse and office space that represented an investment of nearly $10 million in their new Norcross facility. Named as one of Taiwan's top 20 brands in 2010, the company distributes auto headlights as their main line of business along with other types of auto parts. Within the next year 30 new jobs are expected to be created.
Newton County will be getting another grocery store early in 2011. Save-A-Lot has signed a lease to move into the anchor location at Covington Corners. The 24,000 square foot location had been vacant for four years, however the new business will only use 18,500 square feet with the remainder of the footage to be leased to another retailer. The company sells a limited assortment of products for very competitive prices. The new store will employ 20 to 25 people.
It has been announced that a new retailer is coming to Richmond County with plans to open in November of 2011. Costco will be opening a new store at the Village at Riverwatch. The new Augusta retail outlet will sell in bulk and is expecting to do an annual volume of $135 million. The community also expects that part of the store's volume will come from across the state line in the form of South Carolina dollars. The completion date is currently set for November 2011 and the new hires will number between 150 and 200 people.
A call center operation in Cobb County has announced plans to hire an additional 400 permanent employees along with 1,000 seasonal employees for the holiday season. Ryla, headquartered in Kennesaw, has new contracts to enroll employees in a healthcare plan and they will also do federal government work for a third party contractor which will be handled by the 400 permanent employees. The majority of the company's busi-

ness comes from Fortune 500 companies for which they provide customer service, tech support, data collection, surveys, and other administrative office work.
A chemical company plans to nearly triple its size in Forsyth County. Arch Chemicals, Inc. will add a 60,000 square foot facility next to its existing 35,000 square foot plant on Bluegrass Lakes Parkway. The expansion will represent a capital investment of $8 million and will create about 80 new jobs for the area. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of spa and pool treatment chemicals among other products. Their specialty is developing chemicals to break down microorganisms that grow on wood and in water. The expansion will house their research and development operations that will shift employees from offices in Connecticut and Delaware.
In Forsyth County expansion plans have been approved for Northside Hospital-Forsyth that will result in a $51 million investment which involves adding three floors to the north tower and a three story wing to the women's center. The project is expected to begin this winter and take 18 to 24 months to complete. The facility will include 110,600 square feet of new construction and nearly 10,000 square feet of renovation. The hospital in Cumming has seen growth in every care area that they provide. The resulting new employment from the project is expected to be around 140.
A customer service center in Richmond County is about to double its size. Teleperformance USA has announced that it will be hiring 300 new staff members over the next several weeks. The company works with all of the major cell phone providers. Some of their other clients include Microsoft, Dell, Apple, AT&T, and Priceline. The company's facility in Augusta is located in a 50,000 square foot complex in the old Waccamaw building on Wylds Road.
