New Developments
Exide Technologies in Muscogee County will add 200 manufacturing jobs to their facility in Columbus since it has won a $34.3 million federal grant. The company will use the money to domestically produce lead-acid batteries for micro-hybrid vehicles and idle reduction commercial vehicles using advanced carbon technology. Plans are also in the works for an expansion of their plant to add another line of production. The company plans to produce a battery that is more energy efficient and reduce U. S. dependence on foreign oil.
National Electronic Attachment will be relocating its corporate headquarters to Gwinnett County. The company is a leader in internet solutions for the healthcare industry and offers systems designed to make process of insurance submissions as easy as possible for the patient, the dental office and the insurance provider. Once the new building in Norcross is complete the company plans to hire approximately 25 new employees
FedEx Ground will expand its distribution facility in Cobb County and will add about 270 new jobs in the next two years. The new construction will add 85,000 square feet to the existing distribution center in Kennesaw. With the additional space the company will be able to simultaneously sort packages for regional, local and national distribution by being able to schedule the different types of shipments more efficiently.
Dendreon Corporation, a biotechnology company based in Seattle, will build a $70 million manufacturing plant in Fulton County. The plant is to be located in Union City and will create about 300 jobs and will make Provenge an alternative treatment for prostrate cancer that does not respond to traditional hormone therapy. Provenge is currently under review by the Food and Drug Administration. The company will build a 160,000 square foot plant at the Majestic Airport Center.
A former Fulton County company that had moved their national headquarters out of state is returning after an eight year absence. First Data Corpora-
tion plans to bring 1,000 jobs to the Atlanta area with the move; however the employment increase will take place over a three year period. The desire to consolidate several smaller U. S. offices prompted the company's decision to make the move.
Putnam County has been home for some time to Haband, Inc., and the company is now renovating the old Enterprise Aluminum plant into a state ofthe-art fulfillment center for two large catalog retailers. The $1 million improvement will create 60 new jobs when it is up and running in September of this year. Then an additional 30 people will be hired in anticipation of holiday sales. The new plant in Eatonton will handle hard goods in Solutions and Gold Violin catalogs that cater to customers in need of innovative products to maintain active and independent lifestyles.
In Coweta County, a New Jersey based company will open a facility that packages juice. Gregory Packaging, Inc. will locate its new plant in Newnan and produce frozen juices packed in three-, four- and sixounce foil sealed plastic cups as well as four- and eight-ounce "eco" cartons. The company uses SUNCUP as a proprietary label, but also uses the GREGPACK label. Initially they plan on hiring 30 employees to get the facility started.
Individual life and supplemental health Insurance company, Lincoln National Insurance, plans to expand its midstate operations by adding new personnel in Bibb and Houston counties. The company is based in McKenney, Texas and will add 25 people in both Macon and Warner Robins.
American Packing and Crating has opened a facility in Chatham County that packages odd-shaped and oversized items, such as turbines and boats, that don't fit in traditional shipping containers. They also handle cargo with special packing requirements, such as shrink-wrapping and skidding. The company opened in Savannah to cater to shipping companies that use the nearby Georgia Ports Authority terminals. The warehouse currently employees 12 people but plans to double the employment in the coming months.
