June 2008 Data
June 2008 Employment Situation
Payrolls in Georgia were down 21,900 jobs in June as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 5.7 percent. The over the month job loss is a 0.5 percent employment decrease from May to June. Over the year, Georgia has now added 7,100 workers to nonfarm payrolls, a growth rate of 0.2 percent.
In June, the Goods Producing sector lost 9,400 workers with its component sectors Construction and Manufacturing each enduring job losses while Natural Resources and Mining employment was unchanged. The Service Providing sector lost 12,500 workers this month with several of its component sectors including Government, Retail Trade, and Educational and Health Services losing workers. Service sectors including Leisure and Hospitality, Professional and Business Services, and Other Services added workers in June.
Georgia's Government sector endured the largest decrease in jobs this month as state and local schools shut down for summer. The 11,300 workers lost in June marks the third consecutive month of job losses in the sector, totaling 14,000 workers. Both Educational and Health Services and Manufacturing lost 5,300 workers this month. The jobs lost in Educational and Health Services were due to Educational Services positions dropped by 1,800 payroll employees and Health Care and Social Assistance jobs were down 3,500. The June employment loss of 5,300 jobs in Manufacturing marks the fourth straight month of losses in the sector, totaling 9,700 workers.
After adding a revised 5,000 workers last month, the Leisure and Hospitality sector grew by 2,000 jobs in June and has added 3,500 workers since June of 2007. Professional and Business Services added 1,100 workers to payrolls over the month and has now grown by 4,000 payroll employees over the year. The June employment gain stops a two month span of jobs losses that saw the sector lose 2,000 workers. Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities employment increased 800 in June and the industry has also added 800 workers over the year. After adding 600 jobs this month, Other Services has now added 400 workers to Georgia payrolls since June of last year.

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program began work in 2005 to add new series on hours and earnings. New series have been developed such as average hourly earnings and average weekly hours of all nonfarm private sector employees. Historically, the CES program has produced average hours and earnings series for such categories as production workers in the manufacturing industry and nonsupervisory workers in other industries. The new hours and earnings, covering all employees rather than just production or non-supervisory workers, are more comprehensive in coverage.
The release of these new series are designated "experimental" because of the limited experience to date with the editing and review of the sample reports and the resultant estimates. The experimental State series, being released in June 2008, includes estimates at a total private sector level and limited industry detail.
Read more about the experimental hours and earnings series at http://www.bls.gov/sae/saeaepp.htm

New Developments
The business of recycling various materials has been on the upswing lately and in southeast Georgia there are two substantial examples of what's going on in that sector. In Candler County, Allied Metal Recycling has committed to purchase the old Addlestone Recycling site just outside of Metter. The company will operate a metal shredder like the former owners and will be recycling ferrous and non-ferrous metal that consists primarily of junk cars. However, the new endeavor will be a much more efficient operation in that they will be able to handle the unwanted contaminants such as mercury from switches, hydrocarbons from fuel and lead from batteries more carefully to greatly reduce the chance of these polluting the local environment. When at full capacity the company expects to have created some 140 new jobs for the area.
The other recycling venture is taking place in Chatham County where Newell Recycling of Savannah, LLC is investing $17 million on a stateof-the-art facility in Garden City that will open at the end of this year. The company will initially hire 75 employees, but that count will be up to 100 when the shredder is at full capacity early in 2009. This will be the company's third shredder plant and eleventh location overall and will feature a 6,000 horsepower Newell MegaShredder. This machine is technologically advanced and quickly and efficiently processes and separates ferrous and non-ferrous metals from automobiles, appliances, and demolition scrap into fist sized pieces that can be converted to new metal stock more easily and more cost effectively than mining the earth for precious natural resources.
The area around Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta will have another attraction to visit. This Fulton County location was chosen over several other cities including, Washington, D. C., to be the home of the new $230 million National Health Museum. It is expected to attract approximately 1.4 million visitors annually and create 135 new jobs. It is designed to teach healthy living practices and will serve as a conference center for health related events. The 190,000 square foot museum will give Georgians and visitors the opportunity to understand and experience the revolutions in the health sciences.
New developments in Georgia at this time just can't be talked about without updating the latest information from the wide spread effect of the building of the Kia plant in Troup County. West Point will be the location for Glovis Georgia, a logistics company that has served Kia since 2001. The company's site will be located within the confines of the Kia complex so that they can provide justin-time inventory management for the auto manufacturer as well as timely shipping of the finished autos out of West Point. Glovis Georgia will build their 558,000 square foot facility on a 95 acre tract on the Kia grounds. The business will invest some $60 million into the West Georgia community and when fully operational in late 2009 they expect to employ 600 people.
In nearby Muscogee County another plant directly related to Kia production is locating their new factory where they will produce automotive carpet and floor mats. Columbus is the new home to South Korea based DongNam Tech that is planning to construct a 100,000 square foot facility in Muscogee Technology Park. The company's name for this local venture will be DNT Georgia and their $29 million investment into the community will result in the creation of 350 new jobs. They are considered a Tier 2 supplier to the auto manufacturers because they provide their products to other manufacturers who will in turn use the Tier 2 products to complete their products. DongNam Tech began manufacturing in November 1990 and besides Kia, provides their products to Hyundai, General Motors, and Nissan.
There is good news in Bryan County where Dicon Technologies, LLC will construct a new plant in Interstate Centre Park. The location, just outside of Pembroke, will produce medical components for advanced wound care, skin care, diabetic foot care and agricultural markets. They also manufacture cosmetic wedges and applicators as well as auto and pet sponges. The company will invest $3.7 million in the new plant that will sit on a 6.4 acre site. After opening at the end of this year the new employer expects to work its way up to an employment level of 88 over the next five years.
