March 2007 Employment Situation
Nonfarm payroll employment in Georgia rose by 18,500 jobs in March. The additional jobs are a 0.5 percent increase over the month and a 1.4 percent growth rate over the year. The unemployment rate dropped from 4.4 percent in February to 4.0 percent in March. In March 2006 the state unemployment rate was 4.5 percent.
The Leisure and Hospitality sector gained the most jobs over the month as 8,900 workers (+2.4%) were added to payrolls in March. Accommodation and Food Services represents 6,600 of those added jobs while Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation picked up 2,300 workers. Professional and Business Services along with Trade, Transportation and Utilities each gained 3,400 jobs over the month. The bulk of the Professional and Business Services positions were gained in the Administrative and Support industry which grew by 4,300 payroll employees or 1.5 percent. Management of Companies held flat and the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services industry lost 900 workers.
Retail Trade jobs were up 3,600 over the month and have now grown by 4,000 over the year. The Wholesale Trade industry added 700 workers in March and 2,100 workers since March of last year. Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities positions were down 900 over the month and up 3,500 over the year.
Financial Activities lost 1,400 workers (-0.6%) over the month and has added 3,100 positions (+1.4%) since March of last year. The Finance and Insurance industry lost 500 jobs while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry lost 900 workers. The two industries have, respectively, added 2,100 and 1,000 jobs over the year.
All but one of the metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) throughout Georgia exhibited employment growth over the month. The Athens-Clarke County MSAs experienced no change in total nonfarm jobs from February to March. Over the year job additions occurred in most MSA with the exceptions being the Columbus MSA, which lost 100, and the Macon MSA, which has held steady since March of last year.
