Annual 2007 Employment Situation
Total nonfarm employment in Georgia grew by 57,900 jobs in 2007. This year's 1.4 percent growth rate comes after the state grew by 2.2 and 2.6 percent, respectively, in 2006 and 2005. Since losing over 104,000 jobs from 2001-2003, Georgia's economy has added 302,100 jobs from 2004-2007.

The job gains in 2007 are most evident in Educational and Health Services (+16,100 jobs), Government (+12,800 jobs), Leisure and Hospitality (+12,500 jobs), and Professional and Business Services (+10,800 jobs). The sector losing the most jobs over year was Manufacturing, which lost 16,500 jobs.

The Goods-Producing sector lost a total of 14,000 jobs in 2007. Natural Resources and Mining positions were down 200 over the year. Construction jobs, increasing by 2,700 (+1.2%), grew at their slowest rate in four years. Manufacturing positions, as stated earlier, were down 16,500 over the year. Manufacturing jobs have now declined for the second consecutive year and have experienced their largest job loss since 2003.

Those industries in the Service-Providing sector combined to grow by 72,000 jobs in 2007. Wholesale Trade payrolls grew by 3,600 in 2007 after increasing by 3,700 in 2006. Retail Trade jobs were up 8,700 over the year. Over the past four years, this industry has grown by an average of 8,800 jobs per year. 2006 and 400 jobs in 2007. Transportation and Warehousing jobs were up 4,100 in 2007.
Georgia's Information sector added 1,000 jobs this year after losing jobs in each of the past five years. The Financial Activities sector grew at its slowest pace in over 10 years. Financial Activities jobs were up 400 in 2007 after adding 5,300 positions in 2006. The drop in growth is largely due to employment declines in the Real Estate and Rental industry. Professional and Business Services grew by 10,800 jobs in 2007, a growth rate of 2.0 percent. Jobs in Educational and Health were up 16,100 in 2007. Education and Health positions have grown by 10,000 or more jobs each year since 2001 and this years' gain is second only to the 19,400 jobs added in 2003.
The Leisure and Hospitality sector (+12,200 jobs) experienced one of its largest job gains in 2007. Government jobs were up 12,800 for the year as federal, state, and local agencies added 400, 1,000, and 11,400 positions, respectively.
Several metropolitan statistical areas added jobs in 2007. They are Albany (+100 jobs), Athens (+1,400 jobs), Atlanta (+54,600 jobs), Augusta (+2,500 jobs), Gainesville (+3,200 jobs), Savannah (+5,600 jobs), Valdosta (+800 jobs), and Warner Robins (+2,100 jobs). Those areas losing jobs include Columbus (-600 jobs), Dalton (-1,000 jobs), and Macon (-400 jobs).

Background/Plans: Experimental All Employee Hours and Earnings
The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program began work in 2005 to add new series on hours and earnings. New series have been developed such as average hourly earnings and average weekly hours of all nonfarm private sector employees. Historically, the CES program has produced average hours and earnings series for such categories as production workers in the manufacturing industry and nonsupervisory workers in other industries. The new hours and earnings, covering all employees rather than just production or non-supervisory workers, are more comprehensive in coverage.
The release of these new series are designated "experimental" because of the limited experience to date with the editing and review of the sample reports and the resultant estimates. The experimental State series, being released in March 2008, includes estimates at a total private sector level and limited industry detail.
By the end of 2009, BLS should have sufficient historical data to seasonally adjust the all employee payroll and hours series and is planning to publish them as official CES data in the Employment Situation news release and other BLS publications beginning in February 2010.
Read more about the experimental hours and earnings series at http://www.bls.gov/sae/saeaepp.htm
