January 2007 Data
January 2007 Employment Situation
Georgia's nonfarm payrolls decreased by 63,500 jobs from December to January. This is a 1.5 percent loss in jobs over the month. The highly seasonal loss of jobs lends to the unemployment rate increasing to 4.7 percent in January, up from 4.4 percent last month and unchanged from January 2006. The state has now added 56,800 jobs over the year, a growth rate of 1.4 percent.

Now that the holiday shopping season is winding to an end, those seasonal jobs that are related to them have also ended. The Retail Trade industry lost 20,400 workers in January. This industry accounts for the greatest number of job losses over the month. Workers in the Professional and Business Services sector also endured a great number of job cuts. With a drop of 9,500 workers in January, this sector suffered one of the largest job losses in the state. The silver lining to the over the month loss of Professional and Business Services jobs is the sector has 8,800 more workers in January 2007 than it did in January 2006. Leisure and Hospitality jobs were down 8,800 for the month. This decrease of 2.3 percent of the sector's workforce reflects 1,900 workers lost from Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation payrolls and 6,900 jobs cut from Accommodation and Food Service payrolls. Government related jobs were down 5,300 workers in January 2007 and has added the most jobs over the year, 13,600 positions. Workers on Construction payrolls were down 4,100 over the month but up 10,200 over the year. Manufacturing related jobs declined by 3,400 workers in January and has now lost 10,900 positions since January of last year.
Many of the industries in Georgia experienced job losses in January. There are several industries, however, that added jobs over the month. Accounting, Tax Preparation, and Bookkeeping jobs were up 2,800 in January while positions in Educational Services grew by 1,000 workers over the month.
