Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 32, no. 5 (May 2006)

May 2006 Data
Employment Growth Exceeds
Average for the Month
Georgia payroll employment gained 15,600 jobs in May 2006, representing a growth rate of 0.4 percent. The current increase is above the May five year average at 12,000 jobs. Over-the-year jobs were added at a 1.9 percent clip resulting in 75,600 more Georgians working.
Largely seasonal job gains continued in retail trade, accommodation and food services and arts and entertainment as festivals, amusement parks and other seasonal attractions continued to staff up. Construction added 2,400 jobs in May as home building and demand for the finishing trades remained strong. No sign of ill effects is currently showing despite worries of a housing bubble and possible action on immigration reform. Construction is up at a strong 4.0 percent clip from a year ago, adding 8,300 workers to the state's payrolls. The administrative and support services sector remained strong adding 3,400 jobs over the month and 11,610 jobs since the same period a year ago.

May Employment Trends

Meanwhile the Georgia unemployment rate jumped up to 4.7 percent from April's rate of 4.3 percent. The number of unemployed increased 15,676 as job growth did not keep up with the public's demand for work. The rate however is below the state's most recent twelve month average of 5.1 percent. The U.S. rate bucked the state trend and declined from 4.5 percent in April to 4.4 percent in May.
A majority of the state's Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA's) gained workers except for Albany, Augusta-Richmond and Hinesville-Fort Stewart. All MSA areas added employment over the year with Savannah's growth rate of 2.6 percent leading the way followed by Atlanta-Marietta-Sandy Springs and Athens-Clarke both with a rate of 2.5 percent.
The Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University has predicted that Georgia will add 90,878 jobs by December of 2006 in their latest economic forecast.
