Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 32, no. 4 (Apr. 2006)

April 2006 Data
Georgia Employment Boosted
by Seasonal Factors
Both employment surveys added jobs in April. Payroll employment, which counts employees at their place of work, gained 30,400 workers, while the residence survey, which measures workers where they live, added 20,300 to employment totals. Due to definitional and geographical differences the surveys will not match perfectly yet when there are common employment trends between the two surveys this bodes well for the accuracy of the data.
The state unemployment rate dropped for the second straight month declining to 4.3 percent from 4.5 percent in March. The declining rate brings the number of unemployed Georgians to 199,950. The number remains high but has been shrinking since February 2005. Thanks to a sharp drop in March, coupled with the large April decline, the state unemployment rate has been under the U.S. rate for the second month in a row.
Seasonal factors certainly played a part in the employment growth and unemployment rate decline in April. The payroll survey shows that 32.9 percent of the April job gains were located in the highly seasonable leisure and hospitality industry. During this time of year, hiring activity begins to heat up in amusement parks and food services (bars and restaurants) and of course hotels and resort establishments. Adding to the jobs total for April were construction and administrative and support services as they expanded 1.4 percent and 1.3 percent respectively. Georgia has added 78,300 jobs since April 2005 for a growth rate of 2.0 percent.
The majority of jobs year-in and year-out are added to the Georgia economy in the second and fourth quarters. A total of 59,200 jobs were added during the second quarter (April through June) in 2005. April 2006's strong 30,400 job gain is an excellent beginning to this year's historically key period.

New Developments

They say that variety is the spice of life and you
will be able to find lots of variety in the near future as specialty grocery retailer, Trader Joe's, enters the metropolitan Atlanta market. When this gourmet grocer enters a new market they usually do it in a big way and this time is no exception. To date the lucky recipients of a new culinary outlet are Cobb County with a store in Marietta, Gwinnett County with a Norcross location and Fulton County gets a double dose with an Atlanta location and one in Sandy Springs. Compared to other supermarkets the Trader Joe stores are considerably smaller, but specialize in quite a number of their own brands of gourmet items that help keep costs down. The small number of name brand items that they offer is purchased in bulk directly from the manufacturer cutting out the cost of a middle man. The California based company has developed a strong following in its previously established markets and should do well in Atlanta.
Lincoln County has found a sister in Jiaxing,
China. An upscale patio furniture company has plans to locate a North American distribution center in Lincolnton. Local officials announced that Zhejiank Hero Metal Furniture Company will locate a distribution center off U.S. Highway 378 in Industrial Park East. The company has about $500 million in sales in North America supplying retailers like Home Depot and Kmart. The planned 36,000 square foot facility should open near the end of this year and employ 20 people initially. However, the company could double the size of the distribution center and eventually employ over 100 if business continues to go well.
The ill winds of last summer on the Gulf Coast have
produced a need that a Toombs County company can help fill. Simonton Windows in Vidalia is in the process of adding 120,000 square feet to its existing facility. The company only just ramped up to the existing facility's full production capacity at the end of 2005. The project's total cost is just over $10.2 million. Aided by Southeastern Technical College's Quick Start program for training purposes company representatives expect to hire some 200 new employees when the expansion is completed in September of this year. Simonton's headquarters are located in Parkersburg, WV. The reason for their increase in production is that they produce vinyl and aluminum hurricane resistant windows.

A Chatham County company will be flying higher
than ever before. Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation will invest $300 million dollars in an expansion project that will provide 1,100 new jobs over the next seven years. Unprecedented growth, especially over the last four years, has spurred the need for the Savannah employer to expand. The company, starting with only 100 people, built its first luxury business jet in 1967. That first jet took five months to complete. Some forty years later the company currently employs 4300 people and expects to produce 72 jets this year and 79 in 2007. The expansion will include a 570,000 square foot service center at Savannah International Airport, a 42,600 state-of-the-art paint hangar, the conversion of a 209,000 square foot service center at the company's main site to a manufacturing facility, and a new 222,000 square foot manufacturing facility adjacent to the converted one.
You won't have to hunt too far for a place for hunt-
ing supplies at least if you live near Bartow County. Cabela, Incorporated, the world's largest direct marketer, and a leading specialty retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise is coming to Adairsville. The store would be the company's first in Georgia or the Southeast. The 165,000 square foot store is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007 and would be located on approximately 40 acres of a 400 acre development near I-75 and Georgia Highway 140 at the Union Grove interchange. Since the Adairsville location would be one of Cabela's high-volume, large-format Tier 1 stores it will call for 300 to 350 employees.
Troup County and West Point have landed a big
fish, but not from West Point Lake. It comes from Korea, and it is called Kia Motors. The automobile manufacturer will build a $1.2 billion plant employing some 2900 people. The 2,000,000 square foot facility will manufacture two Kia model automobiles yet to be named along with automobile engines. The plant will have the capacity to produce 300,000 cars per year for rail shipment across the country. Along with the manufacturing, metal stamping, and paint facilities the complex will include visitor's center all connected by skyways along with a 2.5 mile test track and a 5000 car storage yard. Expectations are for the first car to roll off the assembly
line in May of 2008.
