Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 32, no. 3 (Mar. 2006)

March 2006 Data
March 2006 Employment Situation
Georgia added 20,800 jobs to nonfarm payrolls in March. This 0.5 percent growth rate is slightly lower than the growth rate and the number of jobs added during February. Just over one-third of the total job gains for March are in the Leisure & Hospitality sector as all major job sectors in the state, with the exception of Manufacturing, added workers for the month. Considerable job gains were also realized in Trade, Transportation, & Utilities, Professional & Business Services, and Government.
Over the year, Georgia has gained 102,700 jobs. The job additions over the past twelve months has Georgia in the top 10 nationally in job creation. Job gains for the year are wide spread over the major job sectors with Manufacturing and Information registering job losses. Professional & Business Services has added the most jobs over the year followed by Trade, Transportation, & Utilities and Educational & Health Services.
The household survey shows that the March unemployment rate for Georgia is 4.5 percent. This month's unemployment rate is a decrease from the 5.1 percent rate of unemployment in February. In March of last year the unemployment rate was 5.2 percent.
Several of the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the state added jobs in March. The Atlanta MSA added 12,600 jobs, the Augusta-Richmond MSA picked up 1,500 additional workers and the Savannah MSA and the Columbus MSA each gained 800 payroll employees. The Dalton MSA added 500 new jobs in March while both the Brunswick MSA and the Gainesville MSA increased payrolls by 400 workers and the Warner Robins MSA gained 300 jobs. Both the Albany and Hinesville-Ft. Stewart MSAs added 200 workers and the Valdosta MSA had an increase of 100 jobs for the month. Those metropolitan areas with unchanged employment levels from February to March were the Athens-Clarke County MSA and the Rome MSA. The lone metropolitan area with job losses in March was the Macon MSA, which lost 200 jobs.
