October 2006 Employment Situation
Georgia's total payroll employment increased by 17,600 jobs in October. The state has now added 79,000 jobs over the year. The total number of jobs in the state has now grown over the year by 2.0 percent. After holding steady at 4.6 percent for two months, the unemployment rate the state inched up to 4.7 percent in October.
The Good-Producing sector lost 400 jobs in October. Natural Resources and Mining jobs were flat for the month and have increased up only moderately over the year. The Construction sector, after losing jobs last month, bounced back by adding 900 workers in October as Specialty Trade positions were plentiful during the month. Jobs in Manufacturing dropped by 1,300 workers in October and the job level is essentially unchanged over the year. Over the month losses were most severe in the Durable Goods portion of manufacturing as it lost 1,300 workers. Non-durable Goods manufacturing was down 200 jobs in October.
Employment in Georgia's Service-Providing sector was up 18,000 in October with professional employer organizations accounting for 15,800 of those jobs and an additional 2,200 government workers accounting for the remaining job growth.
The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector gained 7,600 workers in October and has now added 17,600 jobs (2.0 percent) since October of last year. The Retail Trade industry along with the Transportation, Warehousing, & Utilities industry both added workers while the Wholesale Trade industry had a job loss in October. Georgia's Information sector has been hemorrhaging as the sector has lost workers in each of the past five months which total to a loss of nearly 1,800 jobs. The sector reversed the recent trend this month as it gained 500 workers. The Financial Activities sector and the Professional and Business Services sector added, respectively, 1,200 and 5,600 jobs to Georgia's economy in October. With education related jobs growing by 1,400 workers and there being an additional 3,100 health care employees, gained payroll employment in the Educational and Health Services sector was up 4,500 workers for the month. There were employment declines in entertainment, the arts, accommodation, and food services industries, resulting in the states Leisure and Hospitality sector losing 2,900 jobs in October.
