Dimensions: measuring Georgia's workforce, Vol. 31, no. 5 (May 2005)

May 2005 Data
Key Indicators
Georgia's May Unemployment Rate Higher Than Nation
For the first time since August 1989, Georgia's unadjusted unemployment rate topped the national figure. At 5.0 percent in May, the rate had climbed from 4.7 percent the previous month. The national rate registered 4.9 percent. The nonagricultural employment growth rate also lagged behind the nation in May. Georgia has gained 17,600 jobs since May 2004 for a growth rate of 0.5 percent. The nation added jobs over the year at a rate of 1.5 percent with 78,000 payroll jobs gained in May.
Georgia's economy continues to lag in job creation. The yearly job growth rate in 2005 has continued to be under the 2004 calendar year rate of 1.1 percent. The rate in May 2005 registered a much weaker 0.5 percent. Initial claims in Georgia have gained 10.4 percent from the same four- week period a year ago. On a positive note, continued claims were down 10.7 percent from the same period a year ago.
New Developments
The retail trade sector in Georgia received some bad news recently. The Winn Dixie Corporation announced that during June and July they would close 68 stores, one distribution center and will sell or close several manufacturing facilities. These actions could effect as many as 5,030 employees in Georgia. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
Marietta employer Lockheed Martin received good news as the US House approved a defense budget that included funding for two planes that had been targeted for elimination. The F/A- 22 Raptor and the C130J military cargo plane have received funding in the House Bill and a similar bill in the Senate is expected to pass. The bill would allow 13 Hercules and 25 Raptor fighter jets to be built. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Georgia New/Redefined MSAs
In June 2003 the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced the updated definitions of metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) based on the 2000 Census. Nationally, this increases the number of metropolitan areas published by the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program from 274 to approximately 400. In Georgia, the number of MSAs has doubled, thus CES will expand its estimates from 7 to 14 MSAs. Below are the counties that comprise each of Georgia's MSAs.
