Georgia's unemployment rate declines in April, up over the year

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the state's unemployment rate declined to 5.0 percent in April, down two-tenths of one percent from a revised 5.2 percent in March. However, the rate was up a full percentage point over the year, from 4.0 percent in April of 2007.

The current state rate, which is two-tenths of one percent higher than the U.S. unadjusted rate of 4.8 percent, continued to top the national rate for the third consecutive month.

While data released last week showed a rise in unemployment insurance claims, preliminary data
from March to April show Georgia gained 5,300 payroll jobs, an increase of one-tenth of one
percent. The data includes workers who hold more than one job. The metro areas of the state
and their job changes include:
Albany, up 300, or one-half of one percent, from 64,600 to 64,900. Athens, up 400, or one-half of one percent, from 82,600 to 83,000. Atlanta, up 1,300, or one-tenth of one percent, from 2,471,000 to 2,472,300. Augusta, up 2,000, or nine-tenths of one percent, from 218,000 to 220,000. Columbus, unchanged at 121,000. Dalton, up 200, or three-tenths of one percent, from 77,600 to 77,800. Gainesville, up 200, or three-tenths of one percent, from 77,100 to 77,300. Macon, down 300, or three-tenths of one percent, from 100,500 to 100,200. Savannah, up 700, or four-tenths of one percent, from 161,900 to 162,600. Valdosta, up 200, or four-tenths of one percent, from 56,400 to 56,600. Warner Robins, down 100, or two-tenths of one percent, from 59,400 to 59,300.
