International wheelchair basketball returns to RWSIR

WARM SPRINGS The Georgia Department of Labor's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (RWSIR) once again will host international wheelchair basketball competition this summer.

Paralympic level competition, which was held for the first time at Roosevelt Warm Springs in the mid-1990s, will again take place in June and July. Women's competition will be held Wednesday through Saturday, June 4-7, while the men will compete July 16-19. Admission is free and open to the public. Schedules for the preliminary, round-robin segment of both tournaments and the championship rounds will be announced later.

"We'll have some of the finest wheelchair basketball players and Paralympic athletes in the world on display here in June and July," said RWSIR Executive Director Greg Schmieg. "Firsttime spectators are always amazed at the level of their play and the things they can do from a wheelchair. We hope people will come out to see these inspiring individuals compete. Everyone enjoys cheering them on, especially Team USA."

For the second time, both the men's and women's tournaments will be named in honor of the former Roosevelt Warm Springs recreation director, Joseph F. Lyttle. Lyttle was instrumental in construction of the Ruzycki Center for Therapeutic Recreation (RCTR) in the mid-1990s. He died on December 3, 2004, after a long bout with cancer.

This year's Joseph F. Lyttle World Basketball Challenge will feature teams from 10 different countries and will continue what has become a tradition of international involvement with Roosevelt Warm Springs that includes Paralympic training camps, in addition to wheelchair basketball competitions.

The eight teams taking part in the women's tourney will be the USA, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Mexico, Japan, Germany and The Netherlands. The men's competition will feature six teams, including USA, Canada, Israel, Sweden, Great Britain and Japan.

The USA squads made it to the finals of both tournaments, held at the last Lyttle World Basketball Challenge in 2006. The American men dominated the field en route to their first title in Warm Springs since international wheelchair basketball competition began with the original Roosevelt International Cup in 1998. The USA women were upset in the championship by Germany.
