Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims down in December; up over the year
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 46,885 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in December, down 2.6 percent from November. The decrease in claims came primarily in manufacturing industries, as some workers who were temporarily laid-off in November returned to work in December.
The number of initial claims filed in December is up 16 percent from December of 2006, when 40,412 were filed.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from November to December of 2007 are as follows:
Albany, up 56, or 7.7 percent, from 730 to 786. Athens, down 69, or 10.1 percent, from 685 to 616. Atlanta, up 675, or 3.8 percent, from 17,632 to 18,307. Augusta, up 292, or 17.7 percent, from 1,650 to 1,942. Brunswick, down 54, or 12.9 percent, from 418 to 364. Columbus, up 448, or 56 percent, from 800 to 1,248. Dalton, down 67, or three percent, from 2,246 to 2,179. Gainesville, up 47, or 7.5 percent, from 628 to 675. Hinesville, up five, or three percent, from 166 to 171. Macon, up 228, or 20.8 percent, from 1,095 to 1,323. Rome, down 69, or 9.4 percent, from 734 to 665. Savannah, up 15, or 1.6 percent, from 962 to 977. Valdosta, down 193, or 21.3 percent, from 907 to 714. Warner Robins, up 73, or 22 percent, from 332 to 405.
