Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims show seasonal decline in August

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 34,340 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in August, down 23.7 percent from July. The decrease in claims came mostly in manufacturing industries, as employees affected by seasonal layoffs in July returned to work in August.

While initial claims were down from July to August, they were up 1.4 percent from August of 2006 when 33,852 were filed.

The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from July to August of
2007 are as follows:
Albany, down 245, or 29 percent, from 845 to 600. Athens, down 48, or 8.3 percent, from 576 to 528. Atlanta, down 2,198, or 11.8 percent, from 18,605 to 16,407. Augusta, down 574, or 24.3 percent, from 2,358 to 1,784. Brunswick, down 45, or 11.9 percent, from 378 to 333. Columbus, down 107, or 11 percent, from 976 to 869. Dalton, down 186, or 15.6 percent, from 1,196 to 1,010. Gainesville, down 20, or 4.1 percent, from 491 to 471. Hinesville, down 56, or 24.9 percent, from 225 to 169. Macon, down 229, or 20.4 percent, from 1,124 to 895. Rome, down 443, or 45.9 percent, from 965 to 522. Savannah, down 131, or 12.7 percent, from 1,031 to 900. Valdosta, down 40, or 6.8 percent, from 587 to 547. Warner Robins, down 27, or 8.1 percent, from 335 to 308.
