Georgia Rehabilitation Association Initiates Bike Program at RWSIR
WARM SPRINGS Thanks to the Georgia Rehabilitation Association (GRA), a new program will soon be offered at Roosevelt Warm Springs' Ruzycki Center for Therapeutic Recreation.
The Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (RWSIR), a division of the Georgia Department of Labor's Rehabilitation Services, was recently the recipient of a $1,000 check from GRA to start a Vocational Rehabilitation Unit Student Biking Program.
The new program will introduce VRU students to biking, promoting cardiovascular benefits and life-long health. Leisure activities such as biking are discussed with each VRU student (young people with disabilities from throughout the state) upon admission, and the bike program will serve as an additional recreation course, teaching the proper way to ride, rules of safety, bike maintenance and social aspects of biking.
Plans call for the purchase of six bikes for students and one for an instructor, as well as helmets, water bottles and an entry-level tandem bike for visually impaired students.
On hand to make the check presentation to RCTR Director Rosanna Borders and RWSIR Executive Director Greg Schmieg was Kenneth Bennett, current GRA president.
Along with learning the benefits of biking, Borders indicated there's also the possibility of Roosevelt Warm Springs students taking part in riding opportunities or competitions throughout the state, including Special Olympics.
